Fresno State and Air Force continue their five-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 3:05 p.m. Salute to Services Weekend continues as all active and retired military members get in to the games for free.
FRESNO, Calif. - Behind two stellar starting pitching performances from junior right-handed pitchers Ryan Jensen and Davis Moore, the Diamond 'Dogs swept a doubleheader over Air Force on Friday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium winning game one, 6-0 in seven innings and game two, 5-2 in nine innings.
Playing as the road team in both contests, Fresno State (18-11, 6-5 MW) used career-high strikeout totals from both Jensen and Moore to limit Air Force (15-17, 5-7 MW) to two runs and 13 hits in total over the two games.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were paced by six hits from sophomore designated hitter Emilio Nogales who matched his single-game career-high of three in each contest. He added an RBI in game one and tacked on a double, walk and a RBI in game two.
Redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum hit his team-leading fifth and sixth home runs of the season with a solo shot in each game and added two RBI in game one and scored two runs in game two.
On the mound in game one, Jensen improved to 5-1 on the season with a complete game three-hit shutout striking out a career-high 14. The nightcap saw Moore toss 6.1 innings allowing eight hits, two earned runs, one walk while striking out a career-best 11.
Redshirt sophomore Oscar Carvajal picked up his third win of the season with an inning of work keeping the game tied at 2-2 before a three-run ninth inning opened the door for sophomore southpaw Jaime Arias to come in and pick up his seventh save of the season.
How It Happened Game One
The 'Dogs got the scoring started in the top of the second with leadoff singles by senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey and Nogales putting runners at first and third with no outs. Looking for a big inning, the Bulldogs were only able to cash in for one run as Dempsey scored from third base on a wild pitch for an early 1-0 lead.
Much like the second inning, Dempsey and Nogales again reached base with a hit by pitch and single, respectively putting runners on first and second for sophomore left fielder Nate Thimjon. The sophomore from Elk Grove, Calif. delivered with a bloop single to left-center driving home Dempsey (watch) for a 2-0 lead.
Fresno State exploded for three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead getting going with an RBI double to left field by redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda (watch) driving in senior center fielder Zach Ashford who led off the inning with a hard-hit single to first base.
Tatum followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home sophomore catcher Carter Bins and Nogales stayed hot with his third hit of the contest with an RBI single to second base (watch).
Tatum wrapped up the 'Dogs scoring in the top of the seventh with a one-out solo home run down the left field line (watch) to give the 'Dogs their 14th game this season scoring at least six runs.
Jensen limited Air Force to a total of seven baserunners, three reached on singles, three on walks and one hit by pitch.
How It Happened Game Two
After being shutout in game one, the Falcons wasted little time scoring in game two scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI single to right-center by left fielder Tommy Gillman who drove in right fielder Ashton Easley who led off with a double to left field.
Moore was able to limit the damage to one run and the 'Dogs quickly answered back in the top of the second as Nogales roped an RBI double down the right field line driving in Tatum from first base who hurried home to tie the game at 1-1 (watch).
Air Force took back a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as centerfielder Drew Wiss led off with a solo home run to right field, but the 'Dogs were able to rally back and tie the game at two apiece with Tatum's second home run of the day in the top of the sixth (watch).
The Bulldogs took a 2-2 contest to the top of the ninth after an outstanding throw from Auston Chastain saved the 'Dogs from the Falcons scoring the go-ahead in the bottom of the eighth as the senior right fielder came through with a bullet from right field to nab catcher Rob Dau at home (watch).
The 'Dogs then came through at the plate with three runs as Bins drove in the game-winning RBI with a two-out bases-loaded walk followed by a two-run double to right field by Arruda (watch) to give the 'Dogs a 5-2 lead. Arias came in and worked a perfect bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
