The Diamond 'Dogs defeated San Jose State, 8-6 on Thursday to win the series opener over the Mountain West-leading Spartans.
Fresno State (22-12, 9-6 MW) continued its strong play as of late with its seventh win in its last eight games and the 'Dogs offense stayed hot tallying its seventh double-digit hit game over its last nine contests finishing Thursday with 13.
Five Bulldogs notched multi-hit games led by Nolan Dempsey matching his single-game career-high with three hits. The senior second baseman picked up his eighth double of the season along with a pair of singles and drove in two RBI. Tatum recorded his 15th multi-hit game of the season while hitting his team-leading eighth home run of the season and scored two runs.
Freshman Ryan Higgins recorded his third straight game with two hits, including smacking his first career home run, and junior catcher Carter Bins hit his third home run of the season.
On the mound, junior Ryan Jensen won his third straight start to move to 6-1 on the season. The right-hander tossed seven innings allowing nine hits, six runs, five earned runs, two walks and struck out eight.
Jensen gave way to redshirt sophomore Oscar Carvajal and sophomore Jaime Arias who pitched a perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively as Arias converted his eighth save of the season striking out the side in the ninth.
How It Happened
Facing San Jose State (18-20, 12-7 MW) ace pitcher Andrew Mitchel, the 'Dogs were able to get to the senior southpaw for two runs right away in the top of the first scoring on a two-run double to left-center by Dempsey (watch) for a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the second inning with freshman EJ Andrews, Jr. coming home on an RBI single by senior center fielder Zach Ashford (watch) and shorstop JT Arruda followed two batters later with an RBI fielder's choice for a 4-0 lead.
Higgins made it three straight innings with a run for the 'Dogs to start the game with a one-out home run to left-center (watch) for a 5-0 lead. The Spartans answered back with a three-run bottom of the third to cut the lead to 5-3 with three RBI singles.
Bins' long ball to left-center in the top of the fourth (watch) gave the 'Dogs a 6-3 lead, but the Spartans tied up the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the frame with three runs scoring a pair on a double down the right field line by designated hitter Blake Berry and left fielder James Shimashita scored the tying run after a Bulldog fielding error by Tatum.
Tatum atoned for his fielding blunder in the fourth with a two-run home run in top of the seventh (watch) that proved to be the game-winning hit as the Bulldogs retired the final nine Spartans in the seventh, eighth and ninth to seal the win.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On winning the series opener against the Spartans....
"Ryan Jensen was brilliant on the mound and kept it together all night. He has become so good with controlling his emotions now and getting to the next pitch that it makes me so proud to watch him. There is nothing he can't do and it is because mentally he has a gripe on the game now. That was a great mental game by the team."
