The Diamond 'Dogs defeated San Jose State, 7-5 on Friday evening at Excite Ballpark to clinch the series win and go for the series sweep of the Spartans on Saturday at 2 p.m.
With the victory, Fresno State (23-12, 10-6 MW) moves into a first place tie with San Jose State (18-12, 12-8 MW) in the the Mountain West standings and picks up its eight win over its last nine games.
The Bulldogs continued their hot-hitting ways on Friday collecting nine hits in the contest led by a single-game career-high four from sophomore first baseman Zach Presno. A night after striking out four times, the Clovis native turned the page and recorded three doubles, a single while driving in a pair of runs.
Senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey brought the power to yard on Friday smacking a pair of home runs, his third and fourth of the season, and drove in four RBI.
On the mound, junior right-hander Davis Moore kept his record perfect improving to 6-0 tossing five innings allowing seven hits, five runs, three walks while striking out four as he used the 'Dogs early run support in his favor.
The 'Dogs bullpen came in and shut down the Spartans over the last four innings with sophomore right-hander Jamison Hill tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. The San Diego native gave way to redshirt sophomore right-hander Oscar Carvajal in the eighth and sophomore southpaw Jaime Arias in the ninth who converted his ninth save of 2019.
How It Happened
For a second consecutive night, the 'Dogs took a 5-0 lead out of the gate scoring five runs in the top of the first. Redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum got the scoring started with a one-out RBI single through the left side (watch) to drive in senior center fielder Zach Ashford who led off the game with a single right back at Spartan starting pitcher Tevin Cadola.
After redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda drew the first of his four walks in the contest to put a pair of 'Dogs on base, Dempsey lifted a three-run shot to left field (watch) to put the Bulldogs up 4-0. The scoring barrage did not finish there as the 'Dogs No. 9 hitter, Presno, came through with a two-out single to center field (watch).
As the Spartans did on Thursday, the home team fought back strong answering the 'Dogs strong start with four runs of their own in the bottom of first. With all four runs scoring with two outs, left fielder James Shimashita singled through the left side for one run and third baseman Troy Viola followed with an RBI single to center field to make it 5-2.
Spartan junior first baseman Nick Knecht, who entered the game hitting .127 with only four RBI on the season, came through with a two-run RBI double down the right field line scoring both Shimashita and Viola to cut the 'Dogs lead to 5-4.
The 'Dogs tacked on a run in the third inning for a 6-4 lead with senior right fielder Auston Chastain scoring from first base on a double to right-center (watch) by Presno.
Dempsey smacked his second home of the game to lead off the fourth inning (watch) giving the 'Dogs a 7-4 lead, but the Spartans answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single through the right side by center fielder Brandon Peterson.
The next five innings saw neither side score and only two hits from the 'Dogs and five from the Spartans, but the 'Dogs were able to strand six Spartans on base to keep a two-run lead for the remainder of the game.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On the 'Dogs securing the series win over the Spartans on Friday.....
"These guys have been grinding hard lately and been getting worn down, but they have been playing really well and today was a perfect example of that. The way the first few innings went today, it is fun to be in the dugout right now."
On going for the series sweep of San Jose State on Saturday....
"It is fun to be in the dugout right now and the guys are staying focused with doing their piece. It is my job to move runners and get runners on in and are really taking pride in doing their jobs. I have played and coached on some championships teams and what they all have in common is they understand what their piece is and give credit to the other guy."
