The Diamond 'Dogs extended their winning streak to seven games on Friday with a 10-4 win over New Mexico in the series opener.
Fresno State (26-12, 12-6 MW) was held to eight hits in the game with an astonishing six of them going for extra-bases. Junior catcher Carter Bins hit his fifth home run of the season and scored three runs while sophomore catcher Zach Presno smacked his seventh long ball of the season with three-run bomb in the fifth inning.
Senior center fielder Zach Ashford extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a triple down the right field line in the fifth inning and the 'Dogs added doubles from McCarthy Tatum, JT Arruda and Nolan Dempsey.
On the mound, junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Jensen threw a career-high eight innings limiting New Mexico (18-23, 7-12 MW) to nine hits, four earned runs, two walks and added six strikeouts.
The victory marks the seventh of the season for Jensen who has now won each of his last three starts and has thrown seven or more innings in five of his last six outings.
Junior right-hander Nik Cardinal came on for the ninth inning picking up a strikeout.
How It Happened
New Mexico jumped on the scoreboard first with a two-run top of the first inning scoring one run on a sacrifice fly and one on a wild pitch to take a early 2-0 lead.
The lead did not last long as the 'Dogs answered right back with five runs in the bottom of the first with the first six Bulldogs all reaching base.
Arruda got the scoring started with an RBI single (tweet) through the right side and and after only facing three batters, that would be it for Lobos starting pitcher Drew Gillespie who was unable to record an out. Tatum followed with a single back up the middle (tweet) for his 50th RBI of the season tying the game at 2-2.
Dempsey, named the Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday, stayed red-hot from the dish with a double to right-center driving home both Arruda and Tatum for a 4-2 lead (tweet) and that would be it for the next UNM pitcher, Nico Garza, who also was unable to record an out.
Sophomore designated hitter Emilio Nogales drew a walk to put a pair of runners on base and sophomore left fielder Ryan Higgins made the first out with a liner to second base, but a throwing error by UNM second baseman Tyler Kelly allowed Dempsey to score putting the 'Dogs up 5-2.
The Lobos cut the 'Dogs lead to 5-3 with a run in the top of fourth on a single up the middle by designated hitter Jeff Deimling, but the Bulldogs again answered back with a run on Bins' solo home run.
After Jensen sent down the Lobos in order in the top of the fifth, the 'Dogs put the game away with a three-run home run to left field by Presno in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-3 lead (tweet).
The Lobos did threaten to close the margin in the top of the eighth scoring one run on a two-out bases-loaded walk to right fielder Tanner Baker, but Jensen struck out his sixth batter of the game to leave the bases full of Lobos.
The 'Dogs rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the frame on a double to left-center by Arruda to complete the 10-4 win.
