The Diamond 'Dogs eased to a 16-5 win at UNLV on Friday evening to secure a series win over the Rebels.
Scoring its second-most runs of the season, Fresno State (34-14-1, 19-8-1 MW) used five runs in the first two innings and a strong start from junior right-hander Davis Moore to ease to the 11-run victory.
Matching their season-high with 17 hits as a team, the Bulldogs saw 12 'Dogs collect a hit in the contest. Leading the way was redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda, the Mountain West Player of the Week, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with a three-run home run, a career-high five RBI and scored three runs.
Senior center fielder Zach Ashford added a single, double and three runs scored while redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum added a pair of hits and three RBI. Sophomore right fielder Nate Thimjon added two hits, his sixth multi-hit game of the season, and added two runs scored and a RBI.
Moore improved to 8-1 on the campaign tossing five innings allowing six hits, one earned run, one walk and tallied three strikeouts. Redshirt freshman Kevin Larson threw two innings followed by one inning apiece from junior Nik Cardinal and redshirt freshman Robbie Peters.
How It Happened
Ashford got the 'Dogs going offensively leading off the game reaching base on a fielding error by Rebel All-American shortstop Bryson Stott. Catcher Carter Bins capitalized on another UNLV error, this time from starting pitcher Cameron Jabara on a throwing error, to put two runners in scoring for position for hot-hitting Arruda. The Clovis native unleashed on the ball for a three-run home run (watch) to center field for his eighth home run of the year.
A nice 5-4-3 double play turned by Tatum, second baseman Nolan Dempsey and first baseman Zach Presno ended the bottom of the first (watch) as the 'Dogs wasted little time adding to their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the second. Singles by left fielder Jeff Jamison and Ashford put runners at first and second for Arruda who came through with a RBI single to left field (watch) scoring Jamison and Tatum added a single through the left side (watch) to drive home Ashford.
UNLV (27-26, 14-15 MW) broke up the 'Dogs bid for a second-straight shutout in the third inning with a RBI single by third baseman Dillon Johnson, but the 'Dogs answered right back with a two-run double down the left field line by Tatum (watch) in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead.
Not content with a six-run lead, the 'Dogs doubled it in the sixth inning with a six-run frame getting it jumpstarted with Arruda's fifth RBI of the night on a single up the middle (watch). Dempsey tacked on a run-scoring double, his team-leading 15th of the season, for a 9-1 edge and Thimjon kept the scoring going with a single to center field to drive in Dempsey. With both Emilio Nogales and Thimjon on base, Presno drilled a three-run home run to right field to push the lead to 13-1.
With the game well in hand, the Rebels scored four runs in the final four innings and the 'Dogs tacked on three more runs in the eighth to bring the final score to 16-5.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On getting a lot of 'Dogs into tonight's win over the Rebels.....
"That is always good for a ball club. Moore came out and was all business and had excellent stuff tonight and that is what we will need him to have next week at the Mountain West Tournament."
On enjoying being around the student-athletes.....
"This has been one of my favorite teams to coach and they are tough and resilient and have thick skin. Very coachable and are fun to grind with and I felt it right away in August and September just in the way they were going about their business. The feel in the clubhouse has been fun to be around and if you are a baseball-grinder, it is nice to have someone to enjoy it with."
