The Diamond 'Dogs won the series opener at Nevada, 5-3 on Friday evening.
RENO, Nev. - Behind a quality start from junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Jensen and three RBI by senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey, the Diamond 'Dogs won the series opener at Nevada, 5-3 on Friday evening at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Fresno State (28-13-1, 13-7-1 MW) tallied 10 hits in the contest with Dempsey and redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum each accounting for three base knocks apiece. Dempsey registered his second triple of the season, drove in three RBI and scored a run while Tatum smacked a double, his 10th home run of the season and scored a career-high three runs.
Jensen improved to 8-1 on the campaign tossing seven strong innings allowing six hits, three earned runs, two walks and struck out seven. It was the Salinas native's fourth straight win as he has posted a 3.72 ERA with 35 strikeouts over 29.0 innings of work in that span.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Oscar Carvajal worked a scoreless eighth inning while sophomore southpaw Jaime Arias notched a perfect ninth inning for his 11th save.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs got the scoring started in the top of the second with the first of Dempsey's three RBIs as Tatum came home to score from second on a single back up the middle for a early 1-0 lead.
Fresno State extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth scoring two runs on Dempsey's triple to left-center that drove in both shortstop JT Arruda and Tatum. The 'Dogs tacked on one more run on a single to right-center by right fielder Nate Thimjon that drove in Dempsey.
Nevada broke up Jensen's shutout bid with a three-run home run by designated hitter Kaleb Foster in the bottom of the sixth cutting the 'Dogs lead to 4-3, but the Bulldogs quickly responded with a solo home run by Tatum in the top of the seventh to get a two-run cushion back.
The Wolf Pack made one final comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in Connor Allard and runners on first and second, but Jensen got the Wolf Pack first baseman to groundout to third to end the threat.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's victory over Nevada....
"Again, it was the seniors when we needed them, getting the answer back home run from Mac and Dempsey's RBI hits. Jensen kept going and just kept going and that is beautiful to watch. All the stuff that happened offensively was great, but none of it was as gigantic to me as Jensen continuing to plug away."
On the 'Dogs bullpen of Oscar Carvajal and Jaime Arias....
"It goes back to the old cliche, championships are won with pitching and defense and the biggest part of that may be the bullpen. We have a long way to go and eight big conference games left, but to this point they have been solid and we need them to stay solid."
