Bulldogs hold opening practice of fall camp

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State football team started its 2019 campaign to repeat as Mountain West champions on Friday as fall camp got underway with the first of 25 practices leading into the season opener at USC on Aug. 31.
Â
Before Friday's practice, the 'Dogs stayed active by preparing through their summer condition program, led by head strength and conditioning coach Andy Ward, and player run practices, but it'd been since the Spring Preview on April 13 that the team was last on the field with their coaches.
Â
"They're lifting weights and doing things on their own during the summer so it's exciting to get back out here, especially to see some of the new guys because I haven't had a chance to see them up close and personal," said head coach Jeff Tedford. "It was exciting to see those guys and I was impressed with them. Keep growing every day and getting better every day, I think some of the new guys really have a chance to contribute."
Â
The 2019 Bulldogs had 38 first time players on the field on Friday. Although, with so many new faces, the common belief around practice was the momentum from 2018 will have no problem carrying over to 2019.
Â
"I feel like we're the same," said senior defensive tackle Jasad Haynes. "We have some new guys but we have that same standard, running to the ball, low-shoulder tackling, the same fundamentals as always. I feel like we're the same group just younger."
Â
Senior linebacker Mykal Walker made a similar comment, "I see a lot of potential, a lot of raw talent, guys flying around. We're making mistakes but we're making them at 100 miles per hour. I see a lot of guys helping each other out, I see guys stepping up. I'm excited for this team."
Practice will resume Saturday with the team in helmets only, alike Friday. Shoulder pads will come out Sunday, and again Tuesday with Monday being the team's off day. Wednesday will be the first day in full pads.
