FRESNO, Calif. - Despite two home runs by junior Zach Presno, the Diamond 'Dogs suffered a 12-6 loss to UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
After smacking two home runs as a team on Friday in a 3-1 win over the Anteaters, Fresno State (1-1) tallied two more long balls on Saturday, each from Presno, who finished 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and a career-high three runs scored.
Freshman second baseman Andrew Kachel added two singles while three other Bulldogs collecting one hit apiece.
On the mound, redshirt junior right-hander Oscar Carvajal went six strong innings allowing only six hits, three earned runs, two walks and struck out one.
An array of four relievers worked the final three innings as sophomore right-hander Kyle Pruhsmeier tied his career-high with two innings while striking out two.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first three innings, the Bulldogs struck first on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Right fielder Nate Thimjon drew a walk and left fielder Ryan Higgins singled to left field to put a pair on base for Presno who launched his first home run of the season to left field to put the 'Dogs ahead 3-0.
UC Irvine answered back with three runs bringing one across in the top of the fifth and two more in the sixth to knot the game at 3-3, but the 'Dogs answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth. A one-out double by Presno was followed by a walk from pinch-hitter Mason Grotto to put a pair on base for catcher Zach Morgan who came through with his first career RBI with a single to left field to drive in Presno. Kachel followed with a single and third baseman Matt Ottino kept the offense moving with a RBI single up the middle to score Grotto's first career run.
The Anteaters answered a four-run top of the seventh as the 'Dogs needed three relievers to get through the frame as Robbie Peters and Nik Cardinal were each charged with two runs apiece.
With UCI leading 7-5, Presno smacked a two-out solo home run to right-center in the bottom of the seventh to bring the 'Dogs back within one, but the Anteaters tacked on five more runs over the final two innings to earn their first win of 2020.
