FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team remains tied atop the Mountain West standings following a 2-1 defeat to New Mexico on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped the Bulldogs 15-match home unbeaten streak.
Fresno State (7-5-3, 5-2-1 MW) and New Mexico sit in first place with 16 points. Colorado State is one point back in third while San Diego State and San Jose State are tied for fourth with 13 points.
How It Happened
Following a first half that saw dangerous attacks from both sides, and both running into stout defenses that kept them at bay, the match opened up early in the second half after only six total shots were taken in the first 50 minutes. The match changed in the 53rd minute as the Bulldogs were whistled for an apparent foul in the box as Zaria Katesigwa lost her balance and tumbled into Robyn McCarthy. Jadyn Edwards stepped up and placed the penalty kick just inside the left post out of the reach of a diving Ella Wilson.
The Bulldogs were forced to send bodies forward in the attack allowing chances at both ends of the field. After the 'Dogs had a trio of shots blocked in the ensuing 10 minutes, and an opener header from Chais Wright off a corner screamed over the crossbar, Fresno State found its equalizer. In the 63rd minute, Sam Tristan popped a ball up to Jordan Brown outside the box. The senior headed it down to Kaelyn Miller who split a pair of defenders and chipped a shot over Lobo keeper Emily Johnson.
Less than 10 minutes later, though, New Mexico responded through a corner. Initially headed out of the six-yard box, the ball fell to an unmarked Alexa Kirton just inside the 18. The Lobo struck a low shot toward the left side of the goal that found its way through a slew bodies and into the back of the net.
Fresno State was unable to find an equalizer a second time. The Lobos ended the match with an 11-10 shot advantage as 15 of the game's 21 shots were attempted in the final 40 minutes.
