'Dogs drop tight battle at USF

SAN FRANCISCO - Despite a six-run top of the fifth inning, the Diamond 'Dogs dropped a hard-fought contest at San Francisco, 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
Fresno State (2-2) notched 10 hits on the afternoon and grabbed a 6-0 lead, but it was not enough as San Francisco (4-4) answered back with seven unanswered runs.
Sophomore third baseman Andrew Kachel matched his career high with three hits picking up two singles and a double to go along with an RBI and run scored.
Outfielders Nate Thimjon and Dylan Johnson had two hits apiece as the pair each scored a run and drove in an RBI.
On the mound, seven pitchers saw action with senior Nik Cardinal getting his second straight start. After only lasting 1.1 innings on Sunday against CSUB, the Canada native returned to the mound nearly 48 hours for 2.0 innings allowing only one hit.
Cooper Bergman, Raul Salazar, Alex Kendrick, Kevin Larson, Julian Sotelo and Robbie Peters all saw action in relief for the 'Dogs. Peters struck out a career-high three striking out the side in the eighth.
How It Happened
A slow start offensively saw neither team score in the first four innings of play, but the Diamond 'Dogs quickly changed that in the fifth exploding for a six-run frame sending 11 guys to the plate.
With the bases loaded and one out, Thimjon got the offense jump started with an RBI single to right-center and Johnson quickly followed with an RBI single himself to give the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead.
The bases remain loaded as the next three Bulldogs, Ryan Higgins, EJ Andrews, Jr. and pinch-hitter Ivan Luna, all drew walks to bring in runs and make it 5-0. The scoring was complete with an RBI single by Kachel to center.
Unfortunately, that was all the scoring the Bulldogs were able to do on the afternoon as the Dons answered with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the fifth before five more runs in the sixth gave the Dons a 7-6 lead.
The 'Dogs made one final effort to tie the game in the top of the ninth getting singles from Thimjon and Johnson to put runners on the corners with no outs, but were unable to score.
