Diamond 'Dogs battle in 11-8 loss at Stanford
3/28/2021 5:25:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno State (7-10) battled back from deficits of 4-0 and 7-4 to take a momentary 8-7 lead, but four runs by Stanford (14-3) in the bottom of the eighth proved to be too much to overcome.
The 'Dogs held a 12-10 advantage in hits on the afternoon with five Bulldogs finishing with two hits apiece.
Ryan Higgins went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and a walk while Josh Lauck added two hits, including a double, and scored two runs.
Dylan Johnson came off the bench to pinch-hit in the fifth inning and finished the game with two hits, matched a career high with three RBIs and scored a run.
On the mound, sophomore left-hander Jake Dixon made his sixth start of the season going two innings allowing three hits and three runs before giving way to Nik Cardinal, Kyle Pruhsmeier, Oscar Carvajal and Robbie Peters.
How It Happened
Stanford jumped out to a 4-0 lead scoring one run in the first on a solo home run, added two in the second on a two-run homer by Tim Tawa and picked up one more in the third on an RBI double.
The 'Dogs started their first comeback in the fourth with a two-out solo home run by Higgins (watch), added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to knot the game at 4-4.
Johnson got the scoring started with a pinch-hit RBI single (watch) through the left side in the fifth. Andrew Kachel brought the 'Dogs within one driving in Higgins with an RBI single to center field (watch) before a bouncer to third by Johnson was misplayed by Stanford allowing Kachel to score from third (watch) to tie the game.
The Cardinal answered back in the bottom of the sixth with three runs scoring on a bases-loaded walk and a two-run RBI single by Tawa to take a 7-4 lead.
The Bulldogs refused to go away coming back to score four in the top of the eighth to take a 8-7 lead with Zach Morgan getting the scoring going with an RBI single back up the middle (watch).
Continuing to come up with big plays all day, Johnson delivered again with a two-run RBI double to right field (watch) that bounced off the outfield wall allowing Morgan and Lauck to score to tie the game at 7-7.
The 'Dogs took their first lead of the weekend series on an RBI single by EJ Andrews, Jr. (watch) as he beat out an infield single allowing Johnson to score.
The Bulldogs' one-run lead was short lived as Stanford answered back with four runs in the bottom of the eighth getting a two-run home run by Tawa followed by two more runs to take a three-run cushion to the ninth where the 'Dogs were retired.
