'Dogs drop pair in Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The Diamond 'Dogs battled to the very end, but dropped a pair of games on Friday afternoon to UNLV at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Fresno State (7-12, 4-7 MW) fell in the first game, 9-5 before taking a 7-3 lead into the ninth inning of game two only to see UNLV (10-7, 8-6 MW) come back for a 10-9 win in 10 innings.
The Bulldogs totaled 20 hits in the two games with seven in the opener and 13 more in the night cap.
The long ball was on full display on Friday as the 'Dogs smacked six home runs between the two games with both EJ Andrews, Jr. and Nate Thimjon hitting a pair on the day.
Andrew Kachel and Vinny Bologna hit the 'Dogs other two home runs to give Fresno State 18 home runs as a team through 19 games.
Andrews, Jr. and Thimjon each matched their career highs with three hits apiece in game two with Kachel, Bologna and Zach Presno also tallying multi-hit games.
On the mound, sophomore left-hander Jake Dixon got the start in game one throwing five innings before giving way to Oscar Carvajal for the final three innings.
Game two saw southpaw Ixan Henderson make his second of the season going two innings with Cooper Bergman, Kyle Pruhsmeier, Nik Cardinal and Robbie Peters coming on in relief.
How It Happened
UNLV opened game one up with two runs in the first inning on back-to-back RBI triples, added another on a Bulldog throwing error in the second inning and exploded for five more in the third to take a 8-0 lead after three innings.
The 'Dogs started to fight back with three runs in the top of the fourth capitalizing on a Rebel fielding error that allowed Thimjon and Ryan Higgins to score a pair of runs and added one more on an RBI single through the right side by Dylan Johnson.
The Bulldogs continued to chip away with a solo home run by Andrews, Jr., his first of the season, in the fifth to cut the Rebels' lead to 8-4.
Pinch-hitter Ivan Luna came off the bench in the seventh inning to deliver a one-out RBI double to left field to make it 8-5 and the Bulldogs threatened for more runs in the eighth, but stranded a pair on base.
The Rebels scored the final run of the first game on an RBI double in the eighth for a 9-5 win.
Game two saw the 'Dogs put up three runs in the top of the first with a two-run home run by Thimjon which was followed by a solo home run by Kachel.Â
The Rebels looked to answer right back in the bottom of the frame loading the bases with one out, but could only get one run on a fielder's choice.Â
The Bulldogs' third home run of the second game came from Bologna in the second down the right field line. The 'Dogs extended their lead to 6-1 in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to Higgins and a sacrifice fly by Thimjon.
UNLV responded with a two-run home run in the fifth, but a one-out blast by Thimjon in the eighth made it 7-3 in favor of the 'Dogs. Three outs away from getting the split, the Rebels' Jack-Thomas Wold hit a two-run home run to make it 7-5 in the bottom of the ninth and an RBI double & bases-loaded walk tied the game at 7-7 sending the game to extra innings.
Andrews, Jr. kept the 'Dogs rolling in the 10th with a solo home run to left field. Higgins added another run for a 9-7 lead with a sacrifice fly to center bringing in pinch-runner Mason Grotto, filling in for Presno who doubled to left-center, but fell on the bases paths and had to exit the contest.
The Rebels kept fighting coming through with three RBI singles in the bottom of the 10th with left fielder Austin Kryszczuk delivering a walk-off single to left for the win.
