Bulldogs secure series win over Spartans
4/25/2021 6:00:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno State (13-19, 10-12 MW) totaled 12 hits in the contest getting base knocks from nine different Bulldogs as Mason Grotto, Blake Wink and Jeff Jamison all finished with two hits apiece.
Andrew Kachel added a double and drove in three RBIs while Emilio Nogales smacked a double and had a sacrifice hit.
On the mound, left-hander Robbie Peters made his second start in as many weeks tossing a career-high three innings before giving way to right-hander Nik Cardinal who struck out a career-best seven and matched his career high with four innings.
Ixan Henderson worked a scoreless eighth and Cooper Bergman worked the ninth getting the Spartans to bounce into a double play (watch) to earn his second save of the season.
How It Happened
The Spartans got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning taking advantage of three Bulldog errors to score three runs.
Kachel answered back for the 'Dogs in the third with an RBI groundout before the 'Dogs exploded for a five-run fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Grotto drove in Zach Morgan from second base with an RBI single (watch) to get started and after singles by Wink and Jamison, the bases were loaded for EJ Andrews, Jr. The junior center fielder pushed the 'Dogs in front 4-3 with a two-run RBI single to left field (watch) and the scoring was closed out with a two-run RBI double by Kachel (watch).
An RBI single back up the middle by Wink in the fifth inning that hit off Spartan pitcher Josh Zanger (watch) brought in Ivan Luna for a four-run lead at 7-3.
The Spartans responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single to center field to cut the 'Dogs lead to three, but a wild pitch in the seventh scored Morgan from third (watch) for the eventual game-winning run and gave the Bulldogs back a four-run lead.
Three more runs for San Jose State came across in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 8-7, but that would be as close as the home team would get with Henderson and Bergman combining to strand three runners over the final two innings to seal the win.
