'Dogs in the Pros: Fall Update

- Eight former Diamond 'Dogs played in the MLB in 2021 and an additional 15 saw action in the minor leagues.
- Aaron Judge and Jordan Luplow will play in the MLB playoffs starting on Tuesday and with game seven of the World Series set for Nov. 3.
FRESNO, Calif. - With the end of the minor league season wrapped up and the MLB playoffs starting this week, let's take a look at how the 23 former Diamond 'Dogs in professional baseball performed this season.
Majors
Aaron Judge, Outfielder, New York Yankees, 5th MLB season/Yankees
Judge led the Yankees in batting average (.287), runs (89), doubles (24), home runs (39), RBIs (98) and ranked second on the club in hits (158). His 39 homers tied for sixth in the MLB and tied with the Mariners' Mitch Haniger for most by an outfielder.
Earning a trip to his third All-Star Game in July, Judge ended the season well down the stretch with five hits in his final four games and punched the Yankees' ticket to the playoffs on Sunday with a walk-off single in a 1-0 win against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Yankees finished the season 92-70 and earned the second Wild Card spot and will travel to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday on ESPN at 5 p.m. PT.

Lambert made four appearances with the Chicago White Sox this season tallying three starts and one relief outing. In addition, Lambert made 19 starts in Triple-A with the Charlotte Knights going 3-3 with a 4.76 ERA striking out 82 in 64.1 innings.
He earned his first win as a pro at Oakland on Sept. 7 tossing five innings while limiting the Athletics to three hits, one earned run and struck out two in a 6-3 win.
Charlotte went 45-81 and finished seventh in Triple-A East Southeast Division while the White Sox won the AL Central with a 93-69 record and earned the third seed in the AL playoffs and will face the Houston Astros in the divisional round starting Thursday.

Lee made his MLB debut on Oct. 1 with the Atlanta Braves tossing one shutout inning and struck out one in a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets. He threw another inning on Saturday striking out two more.
In 35 relief outings with the Stripers, Lee went 5-1 with a 1.54 ERA striking out 54 and walking only six in 46.2 innings. The Dinuba native threw a season-high three innings and struck out a season-high four in a 5-3 win over Memphis (Cardinals AAA).
Gwinnett went 71-58 and finished third in the Triple-A East Southeast Division. The Braves won the NL East with a record of 88-73 and will be the three seed in the NL and take on the Milwaukee Brewers in the divisional round.

Luplow played in 25 games for the Rays after being traded from the Cleveland Indians on July 30 hitting .246 with three doubles, four home runs, eight RBI, 11 runs scored and slugged .477.
In a 12-7 win over at Boston on Sept. 7, the Clovis native went 3-for-5 belting a three-run home run and scored a pair of runs.
The Rays won the AL East with a 100-62 record and earned the top spot in the American League and will take on the winner of the Red Sox/Yankees Wild Card Game in the divisional round starting Thursday.

Miller threw 18 games in relief for the St. Louis Cardinals over the season's final three months after appearing in five contests in June with the Washington Nationals.
The 2008 Wonderdog, who missed nearly a month with injury, went 1-0 with a save in 16.0 innings striking out nine and walked five earning the victory in the Cardinals' 3-2 win at home over the San Diego Padres on Sept. 18. Miller saw his season come to an end on Sept. 25 when he went on the injured list with an elbow strain.
The Cardinals went 92-70 and finished the season with 19 wins in their last 22 games and earned the second NL Wild Card spot and will play in the NL Wild Card Game at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

Wilson made 21 appearances for the Reds after being traded from the New York Yankees on July 27.
In 16.0 innings, the Wonderdog struck out 14 and allowed only five earned runs for a 2.81 ERA and earned his 500th career strikeout on Sept. 21 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Reds went 83-79 and finished third in the NL Central.

Ward played in 65 games in the big leagues in 2021 seeing time in May, June & July with the Angels before being sent down to Triple-A with the Salt Lake Bees playing in six games before being placed on the injured list.
He hit .250 from the dish with the Angels finishing with 52 hits, 15 doubles, eight home runs, 33 RBIs and 33 runs scored and slugged .438. In 13 games with the Bees, he smacked nine doubles and four home runs.
He finished the season making a pair of starts in the outfield for the Angels on Sept. 29 & 30 before seeing his season come to a close after exiting the game against the Rangers on the 30th with right abductor tightness.
Salt Lake went 55-74 and finished fifth in the Triple-A West West Division while the Angels were 77-85 and fourth in the AL West.

Wynns saw action in 45 games this season with the Baltimore Orioles hitting .185 with four home runs and four doubles while scoring 14 runs and drove in 14 RBIs.
The Orioles went 52-110 and placed fifth in the AL East.

LHP Jaime Arias - Lynchburg Hillcats (Class Low-A) - Cleveland Indians
Arias completed a great first full season as a pro after signing as an undrafted free agent after the 2020 MLB Draft posting a 8-4 record with a 3.81 ERA while making nine starts and 23 appearances.
In 87.1 innings of work, Arias struck out 111 and walked only 15 for a 7.4 strikeout-to-walk ratio and held opponents to a .208 average from the plate. He tossed a season-high six innings twice, on July 13 and Aug. 12, and struck out a season-high 10 on July 20 and Sept. 2.
The Hillcats finished the season with a 58-62 record and third in the Low-A East North Division.

Arruda played in 90 games between Low-A Fredericksburg and High-A Wilmington playing in 41 games with the Nationals and 49 games for the Blue Rocks.
The Clovis native hit .208 with 63 hits that featured 19 extra-base hits, including 13 doubles, three triples and three home runs.
He added 14 stolen bases, 21 RBIs, 29 runs scored, drew 45 walks and ended the season with a double and triple on Sept. 18 against Bowling Green (Rays High-A).
Wilmington closed out the season 52-64 and fourth in the High-A East North Division.

Ashford totaled 86 games this season with 72 contests at High-A Brooklyn where he hit .236 from the plate, drove in 21 RBIs, scored 23 runs and added 10 doubles, two triples and one home run.
In a 7-4 win over Jersey Shore (Phillies High-A) on Sept. 17, the Clovis native went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, scored two runs and drew a walk.
The Cyclones went 48-70 and finished fifth in the High-A East North Division.

Part of a trade on July 27 that sent Bins from the Seattle Mariners to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Pirates major league pitcher Tyler Anderson, Bins played in 67 games in 2021. He saw action before the trade playing in 40 games with High-A Everett and 11 games in Double-A Arkansas.
The Fairfield native saw action in 16 games with the Curve after the trade picking up hits in nine games and saw his season come to a close on Sept. 5 finishing the season on 7-day injured list.
Altoona finished 58-59 to finish fifth in the Double-A Northeast Southwest Division.

Brink saw action on the mound in 32 games with Montgomery in 2021 with all but a June 10 start coming in relief. The Fresno native went 4-1 with a 4.42 ERA striking out 61 in 57.0 innings of work and held opponents to a .243 average.
He tossed a season-high three innings twice and struck out a season-best six on Aug. 17 in a 9-3 loss at home against the Mississippi Braves (Braves AA).
Montgomery finished 62-55 and second in the Double-A South South Division.
The Biscuits edged out Birmingham (White Sox AA) by half-a-game for the second playoff spot in the Double-A South taking on the Mississippi Braves (Braves AA) where they fell in five games in the Double-A South championship series.

Dempsey saw action in 17 games for the Eugene Emeralds in High-A before being released on Aug. 9, he collected seven hits with two doubles, a home run, six runs scored and seven RBI.
Eugene won the High-A West championship defeating the Spokane Indians (Rockies High-A) in five games.
RHP Edgar Gonzalez – Springfield Cardinals (Class AA) – St. Louis Cardinals
Gonzalez made one relief appearance on May 5 working one inning and striking out one before his season was finished after being placed on the 60-day injured list on June 11.
Springfield closed out the season 45-75 and fifth in Double-A Central North Division.
RHP Ryan Jensen – Tennessee Smokies (Class AA) – Chicago Cubs
Jensen made 20 starts in 2021 split between High-A South Bend and Double-A Tennessee making 16 starts with the Cubs before finishing the season with four starts with the Smokies after receiving a promotion on Aug. 19.
In his final start of the season on Sept. 16 against the Biloxi Shockers (Brewers AA), Jensen earned a win in five innings of work allowing only four hits, one earned run and struck out two in a 6-4 win on the road.
Tennessee finished the season 46-63 and fourth in Double-A South North Division.
Jensen was named one of eight Cubs prospects named to the Arizona Fall League which will begin play on Oct. 13 and he will be a part of a team with other top prospects from the Oakland A's, Miami Marlins, Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays.

Joining Arruda in Wilmington, Moore saw action in 33 games in relief in 2021 appearing in 18 games in Low-A Fredericksburg and 15 contests in High-A Wilmington.
Moore went 2-2 with a 4.64 ERA in Wilmington striking out 29 in 21.1 innings with wins over Hudson Valley (Yankees) on July 30 and Aberdeen (Orioles) striking out a season-high five on Sept. 9.
The Blue Rocks closed out the season 52-64 and fourth in the High-A East North Division.
LHP Fred Schlichtholz – Fort Wayne TinCaps (Class High-A) - San Diego Padres
Schlichtholz made 34 appearance in 2021 with a pair of starts seeing action in 23 games in Double-A with the San Antonio Missions and appeared in 11 contests with the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps.
After spending all season in Double-A, Schlichtholz was sent down to High-A Fort Wayne on July 19 and saw action in 11 contests despite missing nearly the whole month of August while injured. The San Diego native went 3-1 with a 5.65 ERA and struck out 14 and walked eight while in Fort Wayne.
He earned wins against Dayton (Reds), Lansing (Athletics) and returned from injury earning another win against Dayton on Aug. 28 and struck out a season-high three in three outings and threw a season-high three innings twice, including his last outing on Sept. 18 at Dayton.
Fort Wayne finished with a 54-66 mark and sixth in the High-A Central East Division.

Tatum played in 102 games between High-A Jersey Shore and Double-A Reading playing his first 59 games with the Fightin Phils before ending the season with seeing action in 43 contests with the Blue Claws.
The Clovis native tallied eight multi-hit games and collected a hit in 23 games with Jersey Shore and closed the entire season with 67 hits, including 13 doubles, one triple and 11 home runs, 34 RBIs and scored 35 runs.
Jersey Shore posted a 56-62 record and was third in the High-A East North Division.

After being promoted to Double-A Frisco on June 18, Thomas made 26 relief appearance with the RoughRiders as well as made two relief outing up at Triple-A Round Rock on Aug. 24 & Aug. 28.
The southpaw went 3-2 with a 4.17 ERA tossing 51 strikeouts in 41.0 innings holding opponents to a .250 average. In a 6-3 win over San Antonio (Padres AA) on Sept. 9, Thomas threw a season-high four innings holding the Missions to a solo home run and struck out a season-best seven and earned a save.
Frisco fought for a playoff spot winning the South Division in Double-A Central finishing with a 64-55 record and tied for the second-best record in the league with NW Arkansas (Royals AA), but dropped the tiebreaker.to the Naturals.

Andrews, Jr. made his pro debut with the Arizona Complex League Rockies on Aug. 6 against the Royals Gold and played in 16 games collecting eight hits in 32 at-bats adding a double, three RBIs and six runs scored.
He ended the season with a pair of hits in his final game of the season on Sept. 18 going 2-for-4 with a run scored and drove in a pair of RBIs.
The Rockies won the ACL League with a 44-15 record to claim the league championship topping the ACL Mariners by 3.5 games.

Higgins made his professional debut with the Florida Complex League Orioles Orange on Aug. 7 against FCL Orioles Black and played in four games before being placed on the injured list on Aug. 17 that ended his season.
The FCL Orioles Orange finished the season with an 11-34 record.
RHP Jamison Hill – Visalia Rawhide (Low-A West) - Arizona Diamondbacks
Hill made a pair of starts for Low-A West Visalia Rawhide in September making his debut at home on Sept. 9 against Lake Elsinore (Padres Low-A) tossing four innings allowing only two hits and struck out three.
The San Diego native made one final start on Sept. 16 against Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers Low-A) throwing three innings limiting the Quakes to two hits and struck out three.
The Rawhide finished the season 38-82 overall and fourth in the Low-A West South Division.
