'Dogs and Hornets battle to a draw
9/19/2021 6:12:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FRESNO, Calif. – Sundays this month have thus far meant home draws for the Fresno State women's soccer team. After opening up September with a 0-0 draw with Saint Mary's, the Bulldogs closed out nonconference play this afternoon with a 1-1 draw with Sacramento State at the Fresno State Soccer Stadium.
Trailing for more than a half hour in the second half following a Hornet penalty kick, Jaylyn Wright drew the 'Dogs level with just over 90 seconds left in regulation.
How It Happened
A stalemate for nearly an hour, Sacramento State broke through in the 58th minute. Jordan Lau was whistled for a foul in the box while positioning for an aerial ball subsequently giving the Hornets a spot kick. Aubrey Goodwill slotted the shot to the right just past the outstretched hands of Ella Wilson.
The Hornets nearly doubled their lead 10 minutes later following a quick counterattack over the top. With Wilson racing out to cut off Dana Restom, the Hornet slipped past her sliding effort. Tracking back, Chais Wright was able to step in front of Restom's shot though, deflecting it out of harms way.
With time winding down and Fresno State's home unbeaten streak hanging in the balance, Chais Wright put a 50-yard pass on a rope that bounced into the path of Kassandra Ceja at the top of the 18-yard box. Ceja's second touch found a streaking Jaylyn Wright on the back post as the freshman drew the 'Dogs level with her right foot. Wright's equalizer came just a minute after firing off a shot that was punched away by Katie Price.
Fresno State increased the pressure in the extra time, outshooting Sacramento State 6-0. With just over 90 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Kylie Lucero and Jordan Brown got shots off from just outside the six-yard box but both attempts were blocked away by scrambling defenders.
Scoring Summary
57:29 – SAC – Aubrey Goodwill (PK)
88:24 – FS – Jaylyn Wright (Kassandra Ceja, Chais Wright)

On what changed for his team to get back into the game...
"I was impressed with the fact that once we started to deal with pressure and recognize that we needed to match that, we were just fine and that's when were able to get back into the game."
On what's ahead...
"We've had a really good homestand and that was something that was really important to us so there's some confidence that we can carry back out on the road. And of course it's about starting league play. It's the start of the second half of the season."
