FRESNO, Calif. – Following a furious second-half comeback after facing a double-digit deficit after 20 minutes, Fresno State came up just short on Saturday at the Save Mart Center, falling 61-58. The Bulldogs led by as a much as one on two occasions during the fourth quarter.
Haley Cavinder and Hanna Cavinder led Fresno State with 11 points each. Wytalla Motta and Tamia Stricklin chipped in nine points while Jessica Peterson had a season-high eight off the bench. Wyoming had three in double figures led by Quinn Weidemann's 12 points. Like the Bulldogs, eight of their nine players who saw the court scored.
How It Happened
Fresno State went into the locker room trailing 37-24 as Wyoming shot 52 percent in the opening 20 minutes. The Bulldogs jumped on Wyoming to start the second half, scoring seven unanswered to pull back within six. With four minutes left, the 'Dogs got the deficit down to four before the Cowgirls closed the period 5-2 to extend their lead back to seven at 47-40.
Like the third, the 'Dogs came out the aggressor, upping its pressure on defense. Fresno State held Wyoming without a point until 3:58 when a corner 3 from Tommi Olson ended an 8-0 run that had given the Bulldogs their first lead of the game. Less than 90 seconds later, Daylee Dunn connected from the right corner to regain the lead for the Bulldogs at 51-50. But Wyoming answered again on back-to-back possessions, first finding an open look from the elbow for Alba Sanchez Ramos before Quinn Weidemann found space from 3 on the wing to put the Cowgirls up 55-51. A hard-earned bucket from Jessica Peterson at the other end halved the deficit but a baseline drive by McKinley Bradshaw led to an and-1 with 45 seconds that put the game out of reach.
Team Notes
Fresno State faces a quick turnaround, hosting Nevada on Monday at 6 p.m. PT. The contest was originally scheduled last month before being postponed.
