FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State football team surrendered a 23-0 Homecoming loss to San Diego State on Saturday afternoon, falling to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West play.
How it happened
After winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, the Bulldog defense took the field at the San Diego State 35-yard line. Fresno State held the Aztecs to only 11 yards in the opening drive before receiving the ball at the SDSU 15.
Quarterback Carson Conklin made his first start as a Bulldog, and Fresno State traveled 60 yards down the field on its opening drive before bringing out the punt team after a failed pass attempt on third-and-7.
San Diego State received Nick Verdugo's punt at their eight-yard line. The Aztecs were the first to enter the end zone, capping a nine-play scoring drive with a one-yard rushing score by Lucky Sutton followed by a good PAT attempt to take a 7-0 lead.
The Aztecs extended their lead to start the second quarter with a 42-yard field goal at the 12:20 mark. Fresno State's Al'zillion Hamilton swiped a touchdown opportunity from SDSU, snagging a pass from the Aztecs in the end zone for his second interception of the year. The Aztecs extended their lead with a 50-yard field goal to close the half.
The Bulldogs began the second half with the ball but were unable to move more than 10 yards on its first possession. The Aztecs pieced together a 13 play drive that ended as Camryn Bracha had the read on the trick play, and forced a fumble that was scooped up by Jahzon Jacks and returned 22 yards to midfield. However, the offense went three-and-out again on its next chance. San Diego State tacked on three more with a 27-yard field goal to open the fourth quarter.
Fresno State's offense stayed flat and had another gut punch when Conklin's pass was intercepted and returned 31 yards for a touchdown to make it 23-0 in favor of the Aztecs with 8:46 left in the game. Fresno State made it down to the SDSU 12 yard line but turned the ball over on downs.
