The Fresno State baseball team fell 8-7 in 12 innings on Wednesday afternoon in a continuation of a game suspended due to darkness on March 7.
In a game that was suspended after the 11th inning due to darkness on March 7, the 'Dogs and Waves concluded their contest as Pepperdine picked up the win.
The game was continued today in the top of the 12th inning as the 'Dogs struck first with a two-out double from Akins, followed by an RBI single from Jesse Medrano gave the 'Dogs a 7-6 lead going into the bottom half.Â
The Waves got things started early, with back-to-back singles and a runner-advancing error on an error by the 'Dogs right fielder Austin Guibor. 'Dogs catcher, Nick Warren lost sight of a high-pitch fastball that bounced off his helmet and to the backstop, scoring the Waves' runner from third and moving the runner on second to third. A sacrifice fly from the Waves' Ben Rodriguez scored Jordan Qsar from third to end the game, 8-7.
Playing the Waves for the first time since facing them in the NCAA Tournament in 2012, Fresno State had 13 hits in the contest as junior outfielder Jared Akins had a career-best five hits, including two doubles, and added two RBIs. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda added two hits and Ryan Dobson had his second multi-hit game of the season notching a pair of singles and scored a run.
The Waves got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run RBI double to center field by Nick Costello, but Bulldog relief pitcher Fred Schlichtholz was able to limit the damage stranding Costello at third with a strikeout. Pepperdine added two runs in the fifth to make it 4-0 on a two-out double down the right field line by Ben Rodriguez that drove in a pair off, but Rodriguez was thrown out at third base by the 'Dogs Carter Bins attempting to advance to third base.Â
The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth as Korby Batesole drew a leadoff walk and Dobson followed with the 'Dogs second hit of the afternoon hitting an infield single. After Austin Guibor moved up the runners with a groundout to first, Scott Silva delivered a two-run RBI single to right field to drive in Batesole and Dobson to make it a 4-2 game. Arruda followed with a single back up the middle to put runners at first and second for Stone who kept the hitting going with a single to left field to bring the Bulldogs within one.
Akins made it four straight hits in a row for the 'Dogs with an RBI single to right center to drive in Arruda from second base and move Stone to third tying the game at 4-4. Jesse Medrano kept the scoring going with a sacrifice fly to right field plating Stone and giving the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 5-4.
The 'Dogs held the lead for an inning before the Waves tied the game with a two-out single to left-center by Ben Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh made it a 5-5 contest.
After neither team scored in the final two innings, the Bulldogs went to extra innings for the second time this season wasting little time getting on the scoreboard as Arruda led off with a single through the left side. Sophomore Jeremiah Burks pinch-ran for Arruda and moved to second on a groundout by Stone before coming in to score on an RBI double to left center by Akins for his second RBI of the game.
With sophomore Edgar Gonzalez on to convert his third save of the season, the Wave were able to get to Gonzalez with back-to-back singles to start the frame as the pair moved on a wild pitch before Costello came home to score on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 6-6.
Neither team scored in the 11th as freshman Isaiah Davis came on to work a 1-2-3 inning as the game was called to darkness.
Eight different pitchers saw action as Adam Medrano started his first game working a scoreless two innings before giving way to Schlichtholz. Mark Reece tossed one inning for his second appearance of the season, Ryan Jensen tossed two innings and Dominic Topoozian worked two scoreless innings. Gonzalez and Isaiah Davis each pitched an inning as Davis Moore took the loss to move to 2-1 on the season.
