SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Six Bulldog pitchers combined to shutout Sacramento State 9-0 on Wednesday evening at John Smith Field as the 'Dogs posted their first shutout of 2017.
Fresno State (16-12) totaled 14 hits in the contest for its 15th game this season with a double digit hit total. Senior second baseman Scott Silva had his eighth multi-hit game matching his season-high with three hits coming within a triple shy of the cycle finishing with a single, double and a home run along with driving in two RBIs and scoring three runs.
Four other 'Dogs had two hits apiece as senior third baseman Jesse Medrano had a single and double and scored two runs. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda added a single, double and scored a run, senior outfielder Jake Stone added a pair of singles, scored a run and drove in a run, and junior shortstop Korby Batesole added two singles and scored a run. All nine starters had at least a hit or RBI in the contest.
Sacramento State (14-14) was held to six hits by Bulldog pitching as the Bulldogs held their opponent without an extra-base hit for only the fourth time this season.
After being held to eight runs in three games at New Mexico last weekend, the 'Dogs wasted little time establishing its offense scoring a season-high five runs in a first inning this season. Medrano led off with a double to right center as Silva followed with a double down the left field line to bring in Medrano and give the 'Dogs a quick 1-0 lead. Junior outfielder Jared Akins kept the hitting going with a single back up the middle to plate Silva and put the 'Dogs up 2-0. After Akins swiped second for his second stolen base of the year, Arruda beat out an infield single to put runners at the corners for Stone.
The senior from Carlsbad made it five straight hits to start the game with a bunt single to first base to drive in Akins and give the 'Dogs a three-run cushion as Arruda moved to second. A sacrifice bunt by catcher Carter Bins pushed Arruda and Stone to second and third as designated hitter Zach Ashford followed with an RBI groundout to shortstop to plate Arruda from third making it 4-0. The scoring barrage was rounded out by senior outfielder Ryan Dobson with a single up the middle to drive in Stone and push the lead to 5-0.
Making only his second career start, senior right-hander Dominic Topoozian worked a quick first two innings throwing only 16 pitches to retire the first six Hornets in a row. After getting the first two outs in the third inning on six pitches, back-to-back two-out singles by shortstop Rickey Martinez and centerfielder Ian Dawkins put a pair of runners on base as the 'Dogs went to the bullpen lifting Topoozian for Fred Schlichtholz. The junior southpaw came in to strike out second baseman PJ Floyd as he worked 3.1 innings of scoreless work limiting the Hornets to three hits and struck out four.
The Bulldogs padded their lead to 8-0 in the top of the seventh with a three-run frame scoring a pair of runs on a bunt single by Silva that was aided by Hornet pitcher Parker Brahms throwing error and Silva came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Akins.
A leadoff home run to center field by Silva in the ninth made it 9-0 to seal the 'Dogs first shutout win since May 7, 2016.
Topoozian picked up his second win of the season while Schlichtholz, Adam Medrano, Ryan Jensen, Rickey Ramirez and Ricky Tyler Thomas all made appearances on the mound to preserve the shutout.
The Bulldogs continue their road trip on Friday traveling to Big Ten country to face Michigan State (15-10) in non-conference action at 12 p.m. PT.
