GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -Â The Fresno State baseball team fell 10-4 and 9-5 on Saturday to Michigan State in a pair of non-conference games played at Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids.
Game 1 Highlights
Fresno State (16-14) collected eight hits in game one as senior outfielder Jake Stone had the 'Dogs only multi-hit game with a single and double, drove in three runs and scored a run. Six other Bulldogs had one hit apiece as Jared Akins hit his team-leading 13th double of the season and scored two runs.
Scoring first for the 18th time this season, the 'Dogs got the scoring started in the top of the fourth as Akins led off with a double to center field. After advancing to third base on a fly out to right field by junior first baseman Aaron Arruda, Stone knocked in his 17th RBI of the season with a single back to center field to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
With Bulldog starting pitcher Ricky Tyler Thomas working a clean first four innings, allowing only two hits, Michigan State (17-10) was able to get to the junior southpaw for four runs in the fifth as catcher Matt Byars led off with a home run to left center to tie the game at 1-1.
After a hit by pitch to second baseman Dan Durkin loaded the bases for MSU, cleanup hitter Dan Chmielewski laid down a bunt single back to Thomas who rushed home a throw, but Spartan left fielder Bryce Kelley was able to beat out the force out play at the plate.
With the bases remaining loaded, center fielder Brandon Hughes followed with a two-run RBI double to left center to drive in a pair and make it 4-1.
The Spartans added four runs on four RBI singles in the sixth to knock out Thomas and extend their lead to 8-1. The Spartans added an unearned in the seventh as a leadoff walk would come around to score on a walk and MSU made it 10-1 in the eighth before three late runs for the 'Dogs in the ninth brought some life to the offense.
After MSU starter Alex Troop exited the game after eight strong innings allowing only four hits and striking out seven, the 'Dogs got to Spartan reliever Sam Benschoter for four hits scoring a pair of runs on an RBI double to right center by Stone and added one more on an RBI single by Joe Prior.
Game 2 Highlights
The 'Dogs poured out 10 hits in game two with its top two hitters, Jesse Medrano and Scott Silva, accounting for five of those base knocks. Medrano tallied his 15th multi-hit game of the season with three singles and scored two runs. Silva added a single, double, two RBIs and scored a run. Arruda collected his team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the season with two singles and drove in a pair.
The Spartans got the scoring started in the first with a one-out RBI single to right center by third baseman Marty Bechina and extended their lead to 5-0 in the second with a four-run frame. A hit by pitch and a throwing error by Bulldog starting hurler Rickey Ramirez put runners at first and second for Byars who smacked a two-run double to left center and moved to third after a fielding error by Fresno State catcher Bins. Bechina added an RBI double to left center to drive in Byars and Durkin finished the scoring with an RBI single to right field.
The Bulldogs responded right back with a four-run top of the third collecting six hits in the frame to cut the Spartans' lead to 5-4. Sophomore designated hitter Zach Ashford laced a one-out double to right center for his third two-bag base hit of the year and Korby Batesole followed with a single to put a pair on base for Medrano. The senior third baseman smacked a first-pitch single to right field to drive home Ashford and Silva made it four straight hits with a first-pitch double down the left field line bringing home Batesole to cut the lead to 5-2.Â
A two-run RBI single to left center by Arruda drove in Medrano and Silva to cut the deficit in half making it a 5-4 contest. A wild pitch moved Arruda to second and Stone made it six hits in seven at-bats with a single to left field as Arruda attempted to score to tie the game, but was thrown out at the plate.
MSU added a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run home run to left field by first baseman Zack McGuire to make it 7-4.
Three straight scoreless innings proceeded as both Ramirez and Spartan starter Ethan Landon settled down and shut down their opposing offenses before the Spartans added a run in the bottom of the seventh off relief pitcher Adam Medrano.
Down to their final six outs, the 'Dogs mounted a late rally in the eight inning as Silva delivered a one-out single to left center to drive in Medrano from second base to make it 8-5. With Arruda singling back up the middle and Stone reaching on a fielding error by the Spartans, the bases were loaded with two down for Austin Guibor, but the senior outfielder flied out foul to the catcher to end the threat.
An unearned run in the bottom of the inning that was aided by a fielding error, failed pickoff attempt and a wild pitch made it 9-5 as that remained the final score.
Thomas and Ramirez each suffered losses on the day as Spartan starting pitching was strong all afternoon. Game one starter Troop picked up the win as Landon went 7.1 innings and got six strikeouts to pick up the win in game two.
The Bulldogs and Spartans conclude their three-game series on Sunday from Fifth Third Ballpark at 11 a.m. PT.
