"It was a great Friday night performance tonight and good clean baseball," said head coach Mike Batesole after the game.
Fresno State (24-21, 12-10 MW), winners of six of their last seven, continued to swing a hot bat offensively totaling 17 hits on the evening. Senior outfielder Jake Stone had his 12th multi-hit game of the season finishing a triple shy of the cycle going for a single, double and home run while driving in two RBIs and scoring two runs.
Six other 'Dogs had two hits apiece, including junior outfielder Jared Akins who lifted his fourth home run of the season with a three-run first inning bomb. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda and senior second baseman Scott Silva each extended their hitting streaks to 14 games as each also scored a pair of runs.
UNLV (17-31, 7-15 MW) was held to eight hits as first baseman Nick Ames led the way with a 3-for-4 performance with a home run and three RBIs.
The scoring got started early in the first inning for the 'Dogs as they put up four runs off Rebel starter Alan Strong. After senior outfielder Austin Guibor, who played in his 200th career game on Friday, flied out to center field to lead off, Stone followed with a single up the middle and Arruda followed with a single through the left side to put a pair of runners on for Akins. The Glendale native cleared the bases with a blast to right field giving the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead.
Silva made it four straight hits with his 15th double of the season and after moving to third on a fly out to right field by senior third baseman Jesse Medrano, Silva came home to score on a single up the middle by sophomore Zach Ashford to make it 4-0.
The Rebels responded immediately cutting the 'Dogs lead in half with a two-run RBI double to right field by right fielder Cody Howard scoring catcher Payton Squier and second baseman Justin Jones.
After a pair of innings with no scoring, the Bulldogs scored three two-out runs in the fourth inning with an RBI triple by Guibor down the right field line that drove in junior shortstop Korby Batesole. Stone followed with his third hit of the game with a two-run shot to left-center to put the 'Dogs up 7-2.
The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the fifth capitalizing on a Rebel throwing error by shortstop Bryson Stott that allowed Ashford to score from second and put the 'Dogs ahead 8-2.
After holding UNLV off the board for four straight innings, the Rebels were able to get to Bulldog starting pitcher Ricky Tyler Thomas for a pair of runs with a two-run home run to right-center by first baseman Nick Ames to cut the 'Dogs lead to 8-4.
An RBI single by Silva brought in Arruda in the eighth to extend the Bulldogs lead to 9-4 and a three-run home run to right field by pinch-hitter Torin Goldstein made it 12-4.
The Rebels added a run in the eighth off junior Fred Schlichtholz to make the final score 12-5. Thomas picked up his third straight win and now sits at 5-3 on the season after tossing six innings allowing seven hits, four earned runs and struck out four. Schlichtholz worked 1.2 innings before giving way to Mark Reece who worked the final 1.1 innings as the senior picked up two strikeouts.
The 'Dogs go for the series win over the Rebels on Saturday with game two of the series at 2:05 p.m.
