'Dogs set to host CS Fullerton in 2017 home opener

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team will host Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 12 p.m. PT in the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium, for their 2017 home opener.
Fans will have the opportunity to win free tickets to the Fresno State football home opener on Sept. 2, in addition to a t-shirt toss at halftime. Sunday's game will celebrate Bulldogs Kids Day with jump houses and a face painting station for kids to enjoy. Admission and parking to all Fresno State women's soccer games are free of charge.

The last time Fresno State defeated CS Fullerton was on Oct. 27, 2002 in Fullerton, Calif. when the Bulldogs defeated the Titans 2-1. The last time Fresno State defeated CS Fullerton in Fresno was on Oct. 1, 1997 when the Bulldogs prevailed over the Titans 2-0.

SCOUTING THE TITANS
Reviewing last week – The Titans are coming off of a 2-0 win in their regular season opener against Seattle, Friday night. Atlanta Primus and Sarah Fajnor led CS Fullerton to its first shutout since Oct. 23, 2016 at Hawaii.
CS Fullerton defeated San Diego State 1-0 in an exhibition match on Aug. 12. Senior midfielder Samantha Koeman locked in the win for the Titans with a goal two minutes into regulation. San Diego State owned the advantage in shots during the match (12-4). CS Fullerton claimed the advantage in saves (4-1). The Titans and the Aztecs had six corner kicks each.
CS Fullerton traveled to Seattle for the first regular season match of its 2017 campaign.
Last season – CS Fullerton finished the 2016 season with an 8-10-1 (5-3 Big West) record. The Titan's losing record in 2016 broke their five-year streak of winning seasons, but they managed to make their fifth straight appearance in the Big West Tournament.
CS Fullerton returns 25 letterwinners and 10 starters from its 2016 squad, including leading scorer and 2016 First-Team All-Big West selection Sarah Fajnor. Fajnor scored seven goals and recorded 16 points for the Titans last season. The Titans bring back two 2016 Second-Team All-Big West Selections in Connie Caliz and Tala Haddad, along with two Big West All-Freshman Team selections in Atlanta Primus and Savannah Sloniger.

Reviewing last week – The Bulldogs are coming off a 3-0 win in their regular season opener against Pacific, Friday night. The trio of Julia Glaser, Myra Delgadillo and Kasidee Wiley led Fresno State to victory. Nicole Theroux and Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann split time in front of the net for the Bulldogs, recording four saves. This was Fresno State's first win in its regular season opener since 2014.
Fresno State suffered a 3-1 loss in its exhibition match against Cal Poly on Aug. 13. Fresno State's lone goal was score by senior midfielder Peyton Cline. The goal was scored with 39 minutes left in the match, but the Bulldogs couldn't overcome the two-goal deficit. Goalkeepers Marie Berwinkel-Kottman and Nicole Theroux split time in the box during the contest. They recorded one save each. The Bulldog defense held the Mustangs scoreless for the first thirty minutes and last thirty minutes of the contest.
'Dogs have experience – With only two seniors last season, Fresno State returns 15 letter winners and 10 starters. Bulldogs add six newcomers their 2017 roster.
On the attack, Fresno State returns Myra Delgadillo, Julia Glaser, Peyton Cline and Alyssa Nishikawa. The foursome combined for 68 percent (19-28) of the teams' goals last season and 55 percent of the Bulldogs' assists (12-22). Delgadillo was named to the 2016 All-MW Second-Team. Delgadillo's team-leading nine goals and eight assists ranked second in the MW. Glaser was named to the 2016 MW Newcomer Team. Glaser recorded the second-most goals for the Bulldogs with six, the most for a Bulldog freshman since 2002. Cline was third on the team with four goals and Nishikawa added three assists.
On defense, the Bulldogs return their leading foursome in Sarah Jo Ciapponi, Anna Crawford, Alissa Pham and Olivia Muhrbeck. The 2016 defense allowed the fewest shots in Fresno State history.
In the box, Fresno State returns all three goalkeepers. Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann, Nicole Theroux and Alex Best split time in front of the net during the 2016 season.
In 2016, Fresno State tied for seventh in the MW narrowly missing the conference tournament by two points. The Bulldogs 5-5-1 conference record and seventh place finish was the best finish since the 2013.Â
