Three Fresno State wrestlers finished in the top six at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday.
RENO, Nev. - Eight members of the Fresno State Wrestling team competed at the 2018 Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday at the Reno Events Center as a trio earned top six finishes at the meet.
With three of the eight 'Dogs competing for Fresno State and the other five competing unattached, 174-pound redshirt junior Dominic Kincaid took fifth while 197-pound junior Josh Hokit placed sixth. 157-pound redshirt freshman Jacob Wright was the 'Dogs highest place finisher taking third while competing unattached. Â
Other Bulldogs to compete were a pair of 125-pounders in Jeremy Trinh and Justin Mejia, who made his Bulldog debut competing unattached, but went 0-2 on the day. Rounding out the field competing unattached were freshman Lawrence Saenz who went 2-2 on the afternoon at 141 pounds, sophomore Angel Solis at 184 pounds picked up three wins while freshman Isaiah Perez went 1-2 at 197 pounds.
Wright went an impressive 5-1 in the meet with three wins by decision, a technical fall and a medical forfeit as his lone loss came in the semifinals to Jonce Blaylock of Oklahoma State by a narrow 3-2 margin.
Kincaid was also the victor in five matches bouncing back from a fall by 2018 All-American and No. 7-ranked Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals to defeat Evan Bookman, 7-4 in the consolation bracket and finished fifth after a pair of forfeits.
Finally, only five days after helping the 'Dogs defeat Arizona State in the 2018 Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl, Hokit made his season debut on the mat posting an impressive five straight wins after losing his opening round match to Sawyer Root of The Citadel, 4-0.
Hokit posted a major decision and technical fall before a pair of narrow one-point wins put him one match from placing. The Clovis native rallied from a 7-3 deficit against Mark Penyacsek of CSU Bakersfield to notch a takedown with 0:36 remaining in the third period to send the match to sudden victory where he secured a takedown with five seconds remaining for a dramatic 11-9 win. Reaching his maximum daily limit of six matches, Hokit was unable to wrestle his fifth place match.
