Five Bulldog wrestlers advanced to day two of the 2018 Midlands Championships on Sunday which will begin at 10:00 a.m. PT.
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Fresno State wrestling team completed day one of the 2018 Midlands Championships on Saturday evening at the Sears Centre Arena with five Bulldogs advancing to day two on Sunday.
Gary Joint (133 lbs,), Khristian Olivas (149 lbs.) Jackson Hemauer (184 lbs.), Josh Hokit (197 lbs.) and AJ Nevills (Hwt.) will all compete on Sunday looking to place in the top eight in their respective weight classes.
The tournament got started with the morning session seeing two 'Dogs, Olivas and Hemauer, advance to the the evening quarterfinals session.
The duo each won a pair of matches in the morning with Olivas recording his third technical fall of the season with a 20-2 victory over Tristan Sellmer of Indiana and the redshirt junior followed it up with a 6-5 upset win over No. 6 seed Joshua Maruca of Arizona State using a third period escape to break a 5-5 tie.
Hemauer topped fellow Big 12 foe Zach Carlson of South Dakota State, 4-2 in his first match before defeating No. 5 seed Christian LaFragola of Brown, 10-7 in the round of 16 as it was the second time this season Hemauer has beat LaFragola as he also upset him at the Las Vegas Cliff Keen Invite.
The redshirt freshman from DeForest, Wis., then punched his ticket to the semifinals with a 4-2 win over Bob Coleman of Oregon State in the evening session using a takedown and an escape in the second period and a point for riding time to hold off the Beavers' comeback charge. Olivas fell in his quarterfinal match to No. 3 seed Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa, 13-2 as it was a rematch of the pair's meeting at the NCAA Championships last March in Cleveland.
Joint rallied from a narrow 4-2 opening round loss to No. 10 seed Jens Lantz of Wisconsin to win four straight matches with a major decision and three decisions, including a pair in the evening session to stay alive on Sunday where he will face fifth-seeded Zachary Sherman, an unattached wrestler from North Carolina.
Much like Joint, Hokit also lost his first match of the day, but the football player-turned wrestler ripped off four straight wins in the consolation bracket to keep hopes alive of placing as he came into the tournament as the 10th seeded grappler at 197 pounds. The Clovis native won all four of his matches on Saturday by decision and will wrestle Alex Hopkins of Army first on Sunday.
Finally, Nevills posted a pair of wins in the evening session gutting out a hard-fought 2-1 win over Gary Traub of Ohio State and made quick work of Alex Espositio of Rutgers pinning him in 0:40.
In addition to the five Bulldogs moving on to Sunday, Jacob Wright knocked off a pair of seeded wrestlers at 157 pounds on his way to winning four matches, Chris Deloza and Isaiah Hokit also picked up a pair of wins at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively as a total of 13 Bulldogs wrestled in the tournament.
Session III on Sunday begins at 10:00 a.m. PT with the semifinals, consolation and 7th place matches followed by the 1st, 3rd and 5th place matches in Session IV at 5:00 p.m. PT. Follow action on FloWrestling & BTN Plus/BTN2Go along with results on Trackwrestling and on Twitter at @FresnoStateWRES.
