Seven 'Dogs earn top-five finishes at Reno Tournament of Champions

RENO, Nev. - Earning seven top-five finishes, including a pair from unattached wrestlers, the Bulldog wrestling team placed fifth at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the Reno Events Center.
Leading the way for the 'Dogs was freshman 141-pounder Kyle Parco, competing unattached, who was the lone 'Dog to make the finals as the Concord, Calif., native went 4-1 on the day as he defeated a pair of seeded wrestlers on his way to the finals. After earing a major decision and a decision in the first two rounds, Parco topped third-seeded Chris Sandoval of Northern Colorado in the quarterfinals before taking down No. 2 seed Grant Willits of Oregon State, 7-4 in the semifinals. Meeting up with top-seeded Joshua Heil of Campbell in the finals, an escape by Parco tied the match at 1-1 in the third period, but Heil was able to pick up a takedown and four-point near fall in the final minute for the win.
In addition to Parco, redshirt junior 141-pounder DJ Lloren placed third as similar to Parco, he also went 4-1 on the day. Earning the fourth seed in the tournament, Lloren eased his way into the semifinals before running up against Heil where he fell by a narrow 6-5 margin before bouncing back in the third place match to defeat Willits, 5-3.
Three more 'Dogs took fourth place as redshirt sophomore Jeremy Trinh at 125 pounds, redshirt senior Ricky Padilla at 165 pounds and senior heavyweight Josh Hokit each won three matches apiece on the day. It was the season and heavyweight debut for Hokit, a 2019 All-American at 197 pounds, who went 3-0 with two major decisions and a decision before forfeiting his final two matches to finish fourth.
Rounding out the 'Dogs placewinners were redshirt sophomore Brandon Martino at 184 pounds and freshman Matt Olguin, competing unattached, at 157 pounds who each finished fifth in their respective weight classes.
Fresno State took fifth as a team finishing with 73 points, a 0.5 point shy of Oregon State for fourth, as Wyoming won the tournament with 155.5 points. Campbell took second with 147 points while Grand View placed third with 75 points to round out the top five.
The Bulldogs return home on Thursday, Jan. 2 to host Cal Poly (2-0) at 5 p.m. and Big 12 foe Utah Valley (1-3, 0-1 B12) at 7 p.m. at the Save Mart Center.
