Diamond 'Dogs head coach Mike Batesole won his 800th career game on Saturday afternoon in Fresno State's 6-3 season-opening win over Utah Valley. The 'Dogs and Wolverines play a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT.
FRESNO, Calif. - Despite the winning run coming to the plate in the top of the ninth for Utah Valley, the Diamond 'Dogs held on for a 6-3 win over the Wolverines on Saturday afternoon at Bob Bennett Stadium to secure head coach Mike Batesole's 800th career win.
Fresno State (1-0), who won both its 11th consecutive season and home opener on Saturday, was led at the plate in the game by senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey who matched his career-high with three hits finishing with a double and a pair of singles to go along with three RBIs.
Senior center fielder Zach Ashford and redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum each added two hits and two runs apiece.
On the mound, junior right-hander Ryan Jensen collected his first win of the season tossing five innings limiting Utah Valley (0-1) to five hits, two earned runs, two walks while striking out four.
Redshirt sophomore Oscar Carvajal threw a pair of innings before giving way to southpaw Tiegen Jones for 1.1 innings and sophomore Jamison Hill closed it out with his first save of 2019.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead right off the bat in the bottom of the first as Tatum got the scoring started with an RBI single through the right side bringing home Ashford who led off the frame reaching on a UVU error. Dempsey followed two batters later with a double down the left field line (watch) to drive in Carter Bins and Tatum giving the home team an early cushion.
The Wolverines responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third to cut the 'Dogs lead to 3-2, but the Bulldogs answered with one apiece in the home half of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Shortstop JT Arruda drove in right fielder Miles Tomczak with a two-out single in the fourth (watch), Dempsey drove in Tatum in the fifth (watch) and the scoring was completed in the sixth as Ashford scored on a wild pitch (watch).
UVU scored one final time in the seventh off Carvajal, and after four outs by Jones, Hill came in to get the final two outs of the ninth working around a two-out bases-loaded jam to get catcher Drew Sims to pop up to Bins right at home plate to secure the win.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On today's season-opening win over Utah Valley.....
"It is nice to have some older guys and to feel like we are not young and a tick on the older side, certainly on the experience side. It feels good and comfortable out there knowing we trust each other and we are on the same page. All the things we have learned over the last few years, it is nice to be done learning and get on to winning and today was a good start."
On reaching the 800 win milestone....
"800 is a big number and I have a bunch of people calling the last few days to congratulate and you have the entire offseason to be sitting on 799 and most everyone was aware of it. Here is what 800 means is the support our Dugout Club and administration have done for us and we have everyone pulling on the same end of the rope for a long time and it feels really good."
Notes
- Batesole becomes the 24th active head coach to reach 800 wins in Division I.
- Ashford reached base four total times in the game with his two hits, a hit by pitch and on a Utah Valley error.
- It was both Jensen's sixth career win and Hill's sixth career save.
