The Diamond 'Dogs completed a perfect 3-0 run at the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament with a 3-2 win over Missouri State at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
SAN DIEGO - The Diamond 'Dogs completed a perfect 3-0 run at the 2019 Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament on Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Missouri State at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Meeting the Bears for the first time in program history, Fresno State (5-1) used a three-run fourth inning and strong pitching to defeat the preseason favorite in the Missouri Valley.
The Bulldogs totaled nine hits in the contest despite being held without an extra-base hit for the first time this season. Leading the way offensively was senior outfielder Auston Chastain who went 2-for-3 while driving in the eventual game-winning RBI. Redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda added two hits as well while scoring one of the 'Dogs three runs.
On the mound, junior right-hander Davis Moore earned his first win of 2019 working five innings limiting Missouri State (1-5) to four hits, two earned runs, four walks while striking out seven. Sophomore Jamison Hill, redshirt freshman Kevin Larson and sophomore Jaime Arias worked the final four innings as Arias stranded the tying run on second base to convert his second save in as many days.
How It Happened
Scoring first for the fifth time in six games this season, the 'Dogs and Bears were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first three-and-half innings before the Bulldogs finally got to Missouri State starting pitcher Logan Wiley in the fourth plating three runs in the frame.
With Arruda being the only Bulldog to have a hit through the first three innings, the Clovis native added his second hit, a single to left field, to ignite the action. Swiping his first stolen base of the season, Arruda moved to second and came around to score the game's first run on a single to left by senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey.
Moving to second on the Bears' throw attempt home, first baseman Zach Presno followed with a single up the middle to drive in Dempsey to give the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead.
Keeping the offense going, sophomore left fielder Miles Tomczak followed with a single back up the middle putting runners at the corners for Chastain with two outs. With Tomczak stealing his first base of the season to advance to second, Chastain singled on the ground past Missouri State second baseman John Privitera to drive in Presno and looking to score from second, the fleet-footed Tomczak hurried home, but was thrown out at home and subsequently ejected from the game.
The Bears responded with their lone pair of runs in the top of the fifth scoring their first run on a triple to right-center by designated hitter Drew Millas scoring Privitera from first and first baseman Ben Whetstone followed with a sacrifice fly to left field bringing home Millas.
Missouri State looked to tie the game in the sixth getting its first two batters on base, but Hill shut down the next three Bears with a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to third base. The 'Dogs did threaten to break open the game in the bottom of the seventh loading the bases with no outs, but Carter Bins, Arruda and McCarthy Tatum were retired in order to end the threat.
Taking a one-run lead to the ninth, Arias allowed a one-out single to Privitera and after he moved to second on a groundout, Arias retired Whetstone on a groundout to Eddie Pena at second base to clinch the victory.
Notes
- Fresno State was the lone team to go unbeaten in the Tony Gwynn Legacy with a perfect 3-0 record.
- The 'Dogs 5-1 start to the season is the third-best start after six games for Fresno State under head coach Mike Batesole (since 2003) only surpassed by 6-0 starts in 2011 & 2016.
- Arruda has now collected a hit in all six games this season while Ashford and Bins join him in reaching base in all six games.
