A year after making its return to the national stage with a pair of student-athletes in the NCAA Championships, the Fresno State Wrestling team will send five Bulldogs to the 2019 NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh with action starting on Thursday.

Fresno State finishes fifth at 2019 Big 12 Championship
Highlighted by six Bulldogs with top-six place finishes, the Fresno State wrestling team finished fifth as a team at the 2019 Big 12 Championship on March 10 at the BOK Center in Tulsa scoring 59.5 points.
In total, five Bulldogs earned automatic qualifications for the 2019 NCAA Championships in the tournament as redshirt freshman Gary Joint (133 lbs.) and Jackson Hemauer (184 lbs.) earned their berths day two of the tournament to join three 'Dogs who punched their tickets a day earlier. The pair will join Khristian Olivas (149 lbs.), Josh Hokit (197 lbs.) and AJ Nevills (Hwt.).
Nevills led the way with a runner-up finish at heavyweight followed by a fourth place finish for Hokit, fifth place finishes for Hemauer, Joint and Jacob Wright at 157 pounds and a sixth place finish for Olivas.

The Bulldogs have had 21 individuals earn 33 All-American honors in program history as eight have earned multiple honors, including Gerry Abas (1992-95) and Stephen Abas (1998-99, 2001-02) who are the 'Dogs ony two four-time All-Americans.
The last time the Bulldogs sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships came in 2005, a year before their final season of 2005-06 before being brought back 11 years later in 2017-18. Olivas and Nevills each made the NCAA Championships a year ago with Olivas posting a 1-2 record while Nevills went 0-2.

Five 'Dogs ranked in fourth NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings/third RPI Rankings
On March 14, the fourth and final coaches' rankings and third RPI of the season were released with five 'Dogs in the rankings. Leading the way was Hokit who is No. 14 in the coaches' rankings and No. 15 in the RPI followed closely by Nevills who is No. 11 in the RPI and No. 17 in the coaches' rankings.
A 2018 NCAA Championships qualifier along with Nevills, Olivas checks in No. 19 in the coaches' rankings and No. 21 in the RPI. Rounding out the ranked Bulldogs is Hemauer at 184 pounds who checks in No. 19 in the coaches' rankings and No. 22 in the RPI. 157-pounder Jacob Wright, who did not make the NCAA field, finished No. 33 in the RPI, but is not in the coaches' rankings.
Two-sport athlete Josh Hokit makes NCAA Championships debut
A Clovis native, 197-pounder Josh Hokit stayed home at nearby Fresno State and has excelled both on the mat and on the football field over his three years as a Bulldog. On the wrestling mat, he has compiled a 30-14 record with a 21-6 mark this season after posting a 9-8 record in 2017-18.
Each of the last two seasons, Hokit has also been a running back for the Bulldog football team helping the 'Dogs to a 20-6 record over that stretch, including a program-record 12 wins in 2018 and a Mountain West championship. Hokit has also led the 'Dogs to a pair of MW West Division titles in each of the last two seasons and victories in both the Hawai'i Bowl (2017) and Las Vegas Bowl (2018).
Over his three-year football career, he has appeared in 39 games and has 973 career rushing yards on 228 carries with eight rushing touchdowns. He has added 21 receptions for 163 yards.
Trio of Bulldogs named First-Team Academic All-Big 12
Redshirt freshman Brandon Martino, Jeremy Trinh and Jacob Wright were three of 91 total student-athletes honored by the conference with 61 earning first-team honors and 30 were named to the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or better while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests.
Chamberlain earns bronze medal at 2019 Freestyle World Cup
Fresno State Wrestling assistant coach and Valley Regional Training athlete Jason Chamberlain helped lead Team USA to a bronze medal finish at the 2019 Freestyle World Cup on Sunday, March 17. Chamberlain, who competes at 70 kg/154.3 lbs., went 2-2 in the tournament as Team USA won three of the four duals.
Opening up competition on Saturday with pool play action, Chamberlain helped USA down Georgia with a 10-0 technical fall win over Mirza Skhulukhia. Moving on to face Iran in the second round, the Springville, Utah native fell to Meisam Nasiri by a narrow 3-0 margin as Team USA would drop its lone dual of the tournament in close fashion.
With day one in the books, Team USA wasted little time getting back on track closing out pool play on Sunday with a 8-2 win over Mongolia as Chamberlain made quick work of Byambadorj Enkhbayar for a 10-0 technical fall win. Clinching a spot in the third place match, Team USA took on Japan where Chamberlain fell 5-3 to Kojiro Shiga to close out his tournament.

Fresno State Wrestling enjoyed a great second season back in the Valley with over 17,000 fans at the 'Dogs seven home duals this season. Averaging nearly 2,500 fans per dual, the 'Dogs posted a 4-3 record at the Save Mart Center in 2018-19 and got a season-high 2,971 fans in the home finale against No. 22 Oklahoma on Feb. 17.

The 'Dogs finished their Big 12 dual season against Oklahoma on Feb. 17 posting a 4-4 overall record to finish seventh in the conference. The Bulldogs posted conference wins over Northern Colorado (34-4), No. 23 Utah Valley (26-10), No. 11 Wyoming, 21-12 and South Dakota State (38-3) with losses to Air Force (19-15), No. 20 North Dakota State (21-20), No. 21 Iowa State (31-6) and No. 22 Oklahoma, 25-16.

Pledges for pins is designed to help support the Fresno State Wrestling Program. Proceeds will benefit the Fresno State Wrestling Fund for Excellence along with a portion contributing to the Valley Regional Training Center -- a nonprofit organization that supports Fresno State Wrestling.

- Tim Johnson: The "voice of college wrestling" returns once again to ESPN's coverage, having been a part of it for more than a decade. Johnson was named the 2007 broadcaster of the year by the National Wrestling Media Association. His broadcasting and leadership roles in the sport of wrestling span more than 30 years, including being the director of wrestling for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as the recipient of the prestigious Order of Merit award honoring a lifetime of contributions to the sport of wrestling.
- Anthony Robles: Now in his eighth year as an ESPN analyst, the Arizona State graduate is a three-time All-American and a 2011 NCAA National Champion. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012 and was a Medal of Courage honoree in 2012.
- Jim Gibbons:Â A former NCAA Wrestling Coach of the Year, he won an NCAA National Championship as the Cyclones head coach following a collegiate wrestling career where he was a three-time All-American and two-time Big Eight winner at Iowa State. He was inducted in the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003.Â
- Lee Kemp:Â Won three NCAA National Championships as a wrestler at Wisconsin and three gold medals in the World Championships. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1990.Â
- Billy Baldwin: The actor, a former standout wrestler at Binghamton University, will be a guest analyst throughout the three days for the third straight year. He was a leader in keeping the sport in the Olympic Games having joined USA Wrestling's Committee to Preserve Olympic Wrestling.
- For the third consecutive year, Mike Couzens will call the action at the wrestling championships, handling all the prime-time sessions, as well as Thursday's opening round. Shawn Kenney returns to the coverage and will handle the play-by-play for the Quarterfinals and Medal Round.  Quint Kessenich will be the reporter on all telecasts.

Pledges for pins is designed to help support the Fresno State Wrestling Program. Proceeds will benefit the Fresno State Wrestling Fund for Excellence along with a portion contributing to the Valley Regional Training Center -- a nonprofit organization that supports Fresno State Wrestling.
It works like this, for example, if you pledge $5 per pin and the team accumulates 40 pins during the season, your pledge will be $200. Throughout the season, pins and pledges will be recorded and a letter will be mailed with your pledge amount and payment information.
Levels of Pledges
Cooper - $1-10
Bronze - $11-20
Silver - $21-49
Gold - $50 & Up
