The Diamond 'Dogs opened up its 10-game road swing on Wednesday evening with a 9-3 win at CSU Bakersfield.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - With 10 Bulldog pitchers combining to limit CSU Bakersfield to three hits, the Diamond 'Dogs defeated the Roadrunners, 9-3 on Wednesday evening at Hardt Field.
With Fresno State (11-7) picking up its first win in Bakersfield since 2010, the Bulldogs slugged out 12 hits getting eight of them from the trio of senior center fielder Zach Ashford, redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda and redshirt senior pitcher/designated hitter McCarthy Tatum.
Ashford reached base five times in the contest smacking three singles, drew a walk and reached base on an error while scoring three runs. Arruda matched his career-high with three hits, including smashing his third home run of the season, and scored three runs while Tatum added a pair of hits and drove in four RBIs.
On the mound, Tatum got his second start of the season tossing a career-high 2.2 innings holding the Roadrunners to one hit before giving way to redshirt sophomore southpaw Tiegen Jones who picked up the final out of the third inning. Nikoh Mitchell came in to work a perfect fourth inning while freshman Kyle Pruhsmeier came in for 1.2 innings striking out a pair to register his first career win.
Six more pitchers came in to work after Pruhsmeier combining to hold CSUB (13-13) to one hit the remainder of the game.
How It Happened
The first four innings saw both offenses struggle to get anything going as the Bulldogs were limited to four hits, two from Ashford and one apiece from Tatum and sophomore first baseman Zach Presno.
Unable to get to CSU Bakersfield starting pitcher Noah Cordova until the fifth inning, the 'Dogs loaded the bases with two outs getting singles from Ashford & Arruda while junior catcher Carter Bins drew a walk to load the bases for Tatum. The Clovis native, who stayed in the game as the designated hitter, came through in the clutch delivering a two-out double down the left field line off Cordova to clear the bases giving the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead.
The Roadrunners threatened to break up the 'Dogs shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth putting runners on the corners with a pair of outs for the third pitcher of the frame, right-hander Ryan Sullivan. The redshirt junior was able to escape the jam inducing a popup to Matt Ottino at second base.
Similar to the fifth inning, the 'Dogs again loaded the bases for Tatum in the top of the seventh as Ashford and Bins drew walks while Arruda singled to right-center. Tatum delivered again with a knock to shortstop that got under the glove of Roadrunner shortstop Daniel Carrizosa allowing Ashford and Arruda to come in to score. Presno followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Bins to give the 'Dogs a commanding 6-0 lead.
Only three innings shy of recording its first shutout of the season, the Roadrunners matched the 'Dogs three runs with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. CSUB used a timely two-out popup by pinch-hitter Damian Henderson that got away from Ottino at second to score the first run and added two more unearned runs a batter later with double down the by left fielder Noah Barba to cut the 'Dogs lead in half.
That would be as close as CSUB would get as Arruda completed the scoring for the Bulldogs with a three-run home run to right field in the top of the ninth to make the final score 9-3.
