The Diamond 'Dogs used a ninth-inning RBI single from McCarthy Tatum to defeat San Diego State, 5-4 on Friday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
SAN DIEGO - A two-out, two-strike single to left field in the ninth-inning by Bulldog redshirt senior McCarthy Tatum proved to be the difference on Friday evening as the Diamond 'Dogs defeated San Diego State, 5-4 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Fresno State (12-7, 3-4 MW) tallied nine hits in the game, including three doubles, getting multiple hit performances from three of its top four hitters in the lineup. Senior center fielder Zach Ashford, senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey and Tatum all tallied a pair of hits apiece. Tatum finished 2-for-4 with a single, double, RBI and run scored while Ashford extended his on-base streak to 19 games with a pair of singles to go along with an RBI and run scored.
On the mound, junior right-hander Ryan Jensen was sensational tossing a career-high 7.2 innings allowing only six hits, four runs, two earned while striking out five.Â
With Jensen unfortunately receiving the tough-luck no-decision, redshirt sophomore Oscar Carvajal picked up his second win of the season despite only throwing a handful of pitches as the right-hander was able to get a strikeout for the crucial final out of the eighth inning. Sophomore southpaw Jaime Arias came in for the ninth inning stranding the tying run on second base to convert his fifth save of the season.
How It Happened
San Diego State (14-11, 4-4 MW) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second capitalizing on a Bulldog throwing error by Tatum at third base that allowed third baseman Casey Schmitt to score from second.
With the Bulldogs held to one hit through the first three innings by starting pitcher Aaron Eden, Tatum got the Bulldog offense ignited in the fourth with a one-out double to left field. Back-to-back walks to Carter Bins and Emilio Nogales loaded the bases for Zach Presno who came through with a scorching shot to center field for a two-run double to give the 'Dogs a 2-1 lead.
Nogales added a third run scoring on a wild pitch after an Auston Chastain strikeout would have ended the frame, but instead allowed the senior right fielder to reach base safely. The 'Dogs took advantage of the extra out given by SDSU as Ashford singled to left-center to drive home Presno as the inning ended with Chastain getting thrown out trying to advance to third.
With Jensen cruising through seven innings, the Salinas native went back out on the mound for the eighth and after he was able to quickly retire the first two batters, the Aztecs were able to use a two-out rally to tie the game scoring a pair of runs on a double to left field by catcher Joe Fitzhugh that cut the 'Dogs lead to 4-3.
With that hit knocking Jensen from the game, Carvajal came in to the game and on his first pitch, designated hitter Chad Bible was able to reach base after a Bulldog throwing error would have ended the frame, but instead allowed Fitzhugh to score the tying run.
Headed to the ninth inning tied at 4-4, Ashford and Dempsey hit a pair of one-out singles to put runners at first and second with two down for Tatum who came through with a clutch single to left field driving in Ashford for the eventual game-winning run.

Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's victory over San Diego State....
"There was a lot of good stuff going on. Both teams play so hard and when you are evenly matched and play hard, it is going to be a good game. Jensen was tough on the mound and he kept pitching. Oscar came in and did his job and there was a lot of good locked-in, focused pitches and some really good swings. We may have only scored five runs, but we really swung the bats well and got some good swings off."
