The Diamond 'Dogs won their second straight game at Oregon on Friday evening defeating the Ducks, 5-1 and go for the series win on Saturday at 4 p.m.
EUGENE, Ore. - Behind a stellar outing from starting pitcher Ryan Jensen, the Diamond 'Dogs defeated Oregon, 5-1 on Friday evening at PK Park.
Fresno State (15-9) was held to only seven hits in the contest, but a pair of solo home runs keyed the 'Dogs as redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum and sophomore first baseman Zach Presno each hit their fourth home runs of 2019.
Tatum collected his 13th mulit-hit game adding a single and two runs scored while senior center fielder Zach Ashford added his 10th multi-hit contest with a pair of singles and scored a run.
Posting his fifth quality start of the season, Jensen tossed 6.1 innings limiting Oregon to eight hits, all singles, one earned run, zero walks and nine strikeouts to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Oscar Carvajal came on to pick up his second save of the season retiring the final eight Ducks in a row while striking out two.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs got the scoring started in the top of the second with a leadoff home run by Tatum to left field that just found its way over the outfield wall.
With Jensen only allowing one Oregon hit through the first four innings, the 'Dogs were able to extend their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth as Presno led off with a home run to left-center.
The Ducks cut the 'Dogs lead in half in the bottom of the seventh scoring one run on a bunt single by second baseman Max Foxcroft as Jensen was unable to get the short dribbler to catcher Carter Bins at home plate in time allowing left fielder Taylor Adams to score from third.
Oregon threatened to tie the game as Jensen exited the game after Foxcroft's single with one out and runners on first and second, but Carvajal calmly retired the next two Ducks to keep Fresno State in the lead.
That would be as close as the 'Dogs would let Oregon get adding a pair of key insurance runs in the top of the eighth to take a 4-1 lead.
Leading off the frame with a single to right-center, Bins stole second base and would come around to score on a one-out single to left-center by senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey. Tatum, who reached base on an intentional walk and moved to second on Dempsey's base knock, came around to score after back-to-back walks to pinch-hitter Emilio Nogales and left fielder Nate Thimjon.
The Bulldogs added one final run in the top of the ninth as Ashford scored on a passed ball to make the final score 5-1.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Jensen's performance tonight against Oregon....
"He pitched great. He was pumping the ball in there all night long and he pitches with so much heart and so much emotion. He is learning keep it underneath his shirt and not let it pout out and keep his emotions under control. He is so fun to watch pitch and is the real deal."
Notables
- It is the fifth game this season the Bulldogs have hit multiple home runs. The 'Dogs are 5-0 in those contests.
