The Diamond 'Dogs dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Oregon on Saturday at PK Park falling in game one, 5-3 before losing the second game, 8-7 on a two-out, bases-loaded walk-off single by the Ducks.
With the pair of losses, Fresno State (15-11) split its four-game series with Oregon (18-12) and moves to 5-4 on its current 10-game road swing.
The Bulldogs tallied six hits in the first game and 13 hits in the nightcap as senior center fielder Zach Ashford had two in each contest for his 11th and 12th multi-hit games of the season.
Sophomore left fielder Nate Thimjon matched his career-high with three hits in the second game adding a double and an RBI while junior catcher Carter Bins and senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey each had two hits apiece in the contest.
On the mound, the 'Dogs used six pitchers in game one with junior right-hander Davis Moore getting the start while redshirt sophomore Tiegen Jones suffered the loss.
The second contest again saw the Bulldogs use six pitchers with freshman Kyle Pruhsmeier receiving his first career start while redshirt junior Ryan Sullivan was tagged with his first loss of the season.
How It Happened Game One
For the first time in the series, Oregon got the scoring started plating a run in the bottom of the second on a two-out bases-loaded hit by pitch by shortstop Spencer Steer.
The 'Dogs answered right back in the top of the third as sophomore right fielder Miles Tomczak led off with a double to left-center hustling hard into second base. Senior left fielder Auston Chastain followed with a sacrifice bunt moving Tomczak to third and Ashford drove Tomczak home with an RBI groundout to shortstop.
Oregon took back the lead at 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the third on a two-out single through the right side by second baseman Max Foxcroft driving in designated hitter Aaron Zavala.
A back-and-forth affair saw the Bulldogs re-take the lead in the top of the fifth. Chastain drew a one-out walk and Ashford followed with a double to center field to put a pair on base for Bins who laced a two-run double to left field to push the 'Dogs in front 3-2.
The Ducks answered right back in the bottom half of the frame with a two-out single to right field by right fielder Tanner Smith to tie the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Oregon scored the eventual pair of go-ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single to right field by center fielder Jonny DeLuca driving home both Foxcroft and third baseman Sam Novitske.
Foxcroft and Novitske were able to reach base against the southpaw Jones on a single and hit by pitch, respectively with both coming around to score to deal Jones his first career loss.
The Ducks were able to retire six of the next seven Bulldog hitters as only Tomczak was able to reach base with two outs in the ninth after a Oregon fielding error at second base, but Thimjon went down on strikes to end the game.
How It Happened Game Two
The Bulldog offense found renewed life to start the second game getting off to scorching start as the 'Dogs equaled their game one run output only five batters into the game.
Ashford led off with a single to right field, Bins singled to left field and redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda drew a walk to load the bases for redshirt senior McCarthy Tatum. The Clovis native delivered an RBI fielder's choice bringing home Ashford for a 1-0 lead. Dempsey followed with a hard-hit double to left-center driving in both Bins and Tatum to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
The Ducks answered back with four unanswered runs scoring two in the bottom of the first and added one apiece in the second and third innings to take a 4-3 lead.
First baseman Gabe Matthews hit a two-run double to right field in the bottom of the first to cut the 'Dogs lead to 3-2 while Zavala scored on a wild pitch in the second inning to tie the game at 3-3 and the Ducks took a one-run lead in the third inning on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Cameron Campbell that scored left fielder Evan Williams.
Much like the first game, the nightcap saw the teams continue to trade leads as the 'Dogs regained the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth as pinch-hitter EJ Andrews, Jr. tied the game at four with a double to left-center, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a passed ball to give Fresno State a 5-4 lead.
The lead for the 'Dogs was short lived as Oregon's DeLuca smacked a two-out solo home run to right field to tie the game at 5-5.
The 'Dogs took back the lead in the top of the eighth on a throwing error by Campbell as the Duck catcher tried to throw down to third base attempting to catch Ashford stealing after Arruda struck out, but his ball sailed high allowing the Bulldog senior to score to make it 6-5.
The Ducks again answered with a run in the bottom of the frame with a fielder's choice by DeLuca to tie the game at 6-6.
Continuing to have an answer to all the Ducks' scores, the Bulldogs again came through in the clutch as Thimjon smacked a two-out RBI single up the middle to drive in pinch-runner Chastain to give the 'Dogs a 7-6 lead.
Only three outs away from taking the series over Oregon, the Ducks had other ideas loading the bases with a walk, single and intentional walk off Sullivan. The 'Dogs made a pitching change bringing Tatum off third base and on to the mound. With two outs and Oregon's cleanup hitter, Matthews at the dish, the junior drove a single up the middle driving in the game-winning runs for a 8-7 walk-off win.
