Nevills leads Bulldogs at U23 World Team Trials with sixth-place finish

The 14 Bulldog Wrestling student-athletes representing the Valley Regional Training Center at the 2019 U23 World Team Trials concluded action on Sunday morning in Akron, Ohio with AJ Nevills leading the way finishing sixth.
AKRON, Ohio - The 14 Bulldog Wrestling student-athletes representing the Valley Regional Training Center at the 2019 U23 World Team Trials concluded action on Sunday morning at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House on the campus of the University of Akron.
AJ Nevills, who just completed his sophomore season at Fresno State, placed sixth at 125 kg./275 lbs. as he came into the tournament as the sixth seed. Winning his first four matches, Nevills defeated No. 3 seed Anthony Cassioppi out of Iowa in the quarterfinals with a fall in 0:28 before falling to No. 2 seed Daniel Kerkvliet (Titan Mercury) by a tech. fall in the semifinals.
Jackson Hemauer, who finished his redshirt freshman season in March, went 4-2 in the tournament, including an upset of No. 2 seed Matthew Finesilver (Blue Blood WC) advancing all the way to the quarterfinals before falling to No. 7 seed Cameron Caffey of Michigan State, 7-6.
Adam Kemp (70 kg.) won five matches, Chris Deloza (65 kg.) tallied four wins and Lawrence Saenz (65 kg.) picked up three wins.
Participating athletes are students who are currently officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at a university or similar institute whose status is recognized by the appropriate national academic authority of their country. All competitors must be U.S. citizens - born 1996-2000 (19-23 years old) or 2001 with medical certificate.Â
