FRESNO, Calif.– The Fresno State women's soccer team battled Oregon in an overtime match that ended in a 2-2 draw in front of large home crowd in the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium, Thursday night.Â
"I couldn't be prouder of the fight that this team had at the end of regulation to push the match into overtime," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "It really came down to the wire. We kept being dangerous on offense which is what ultimately forced the extra time. I'm just really proud of our fight tonight. I thought everyone showed up to this match, we had so many contributors. Both big and small contributions really matter in a game like this, especially this early in the season".Â
Â
Robyn McCarthy scored the Bulldogs' first official goal of 2019 in the 29thminute to tie the match, while Oregon surrendered an own-goal to push the match to 110 minutes.Â
Â
Fresno State starts the season 0-0-1 (0-0 MW).Â
Â
McCarthy, Tori Nicolo, Megan Amick, Lorena Montanes, Mariona Segales, Ele Avery, Melissa Ellis, Shantay Tamez, Kayla Calmes and Bailey Kern notched the start for Fresno State, with Milena Zink in goal.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams played tough defense, with only three shots being recorded in the first 25 minutes of the match, before Jordan Wormdahl launched the ball over the top of Zink's head to score for the Ducks and take a 1-0 lead.Â
Â
The 'Dogs quickly responded when Kayla King sent a free kick across the box and McCarthy was there to send the ball into the back of the net with a header, tying the match 1-1 in the 29thminute.Â
Â
Oregon took the offense momentum, recording four corner kicks in a 10-minute span, resulting in another goal by Wormdahl to regain the lead 2-1 in the 42ndminute.Â
Â
The half ended with the 'Dogs trailing 2-1. The Ducks outshot the 'Dogs 5-3 and managed to log a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.Â
Â
The Bulldogs came out firing on offense, outshooting the Ducks 6-2 in the second half, swinging the offensive momentum back to the home side.
With only ten minutes left in regulation, Fresno State sent off three consecutive shots but Oregon's defense was able to deflect all three.Â
Â
The Duck's fouled in the 88thminute, allowing the 'Dogs to get one more shot at the goal. Fresno State sent the ball into a congested box, and caught a defender off guard to force Oregon to commit an own-goal and send the match into overtime.Â
Â
OVERTIME
The 'Dogs played stingy defense, only allowing Oregon to take one shot in the first overtime period. The Ducks missed the shot high and the match was pushed into double overtime.Â
Â
Once again, the Fresno State only allowed one Oregon shot and goalkeeper Valentina Vivas was there to make the save. The clock expired with the match knotted 2-2.Â
