FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team posted an impressive 4-2 victory over Pacific at the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium, on Sunday night. Fresno State had a balanced offense with its four goals coming from four different Bulldogs.
Four goals is the most goals that Fresno State has scored in a match since the Bulldogs defeated UNLV 4-1 on Oct. 13, 2017.
"We are happy to have any player get us on the scoreboard," said head coach Brian Zwaschka, "we set up our attack so that anyone can be available to take the shot. It was really neat to see some new faces get on the board tonight. We've got a week to look at the things we need to clean up before we play CSU Bakersfield."
Fresno State improves to 1-0-1 (0-0-0 MW) on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tori Nicolo, Megan Amick, Lorena Montanes, Mariona Segales, Kayla King, Ele Avery, Melissa Ellis, Shantay Tamez, Emma Chivers and Bailee Kern chalked the start for the Bulldogs, with Valentina Vivas in goal.
Fresno State opened the match with offensive dominance taking five shots in the first 20 minutes, while limiting Pacific to only one look at the goal. Kern took a shot at the goal that the Tigers' goalie was able to deflect it, but Mariona Segales was there to put a foot on the rebound and send it to the back of the net. Segales scored her first goal as a Bulldog to give Fresno State a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
The Tigers quickly responded with a goal of their own in the 25th minute, to tie the match 1-1. Pacific took the lead when Katelyn Chandler stole the ball to take an open shot, making it a 2-1 lead for the Tigers in the 38th minute.
Pacific took its 2-1 lead into halftime. After 45 minutes, Fresno State owned the advantage in shots (8-3), corner kicks (4-1) and saves (3-2).
Milena Zink subbed in as goalie for the Bulldogs to start the second half.
Both teams opened the second half firing on offense, but neither team was able to gain the advantage for over 20 minutes. Fresno State ultimately took the lead when Chivers sent the ball into the back of the net off a pass from Nicolo, tying the match 2-2 in the 69th minutes.
Fresno State would hold the offensive momentum, tacking on two more goals. Jordan Brown scored her first collegiate goal off a corner kick from Nicolo in the 80th minute to retake the lead 3-2. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-2 when Ellis scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Alyssa Renovato in the 85th minute.
The Bulldogs' defense went to work for the final five minutes to secure the 4-2 victory.
"I'm glad we were able to complete the come back and retake the lead at the end of the second half," Jordan Brown said. "We had a little rough patch but we came through on offense when it mattered most. I'm happy I had the opportunity to score and I will take that confidence into our next game."
