HAMPTON, Va. - The Fresno State wrestling team split a pair of duals on Friday at the Virginia Duals falling to Maryland, 22-18 before bouncing back to shut out Duke, 50-0 at the Hampton Coliseum.
Fresno State (4-5), seeded number three in the field, earned five victories against Maryland (2-4) before claiming all 10 bouts against Duke (0-6) as 141-pounder DJ Lloren, Greg Gaxiola at 149 pounds, 174-pounder Brandon Martino, 184-pounder Hunter Cruz and heavyweight Josh Hokit each earned two wins apiece.
How It Happened vs. Maryland
With the 'Dogs facing a 10-0 deficit after two bouts, back-to-back wins by Lloren and Gaxiola at 141 and 149 pounds got Fresno State back within four at 10-6. Cruz followed with a 4-1 victory over Kyle Jasenski at 184 pounds to cut the Terps' lead to 16-12, but a medical default at 197 pounds by No. 25 Jaron Smith over the 'Dogs Ryan Reyes clinched the win for Maryland as Reyes was unable to finish the match.
