FRESNO, Calif. -Â The Fresno State wrestling team earned three wins on Friday evening against No. 18 Iowa State, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell 34-9 to the Cyclones in a Big 12 dual at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (7-6, 2-1 B12) got three straight wins from the middle of its lineup as redshirt sophomore 157-pounder Jacob Wright, redshirt freshman Adam Kemp at 165 pounds and redshirt sophomore Brandon Martino at 174 pounds all earned wins by decisions.
Iowa State (6-4, 3-1 B12) countered earning bonus points in all seven of its victories registering a pair of falls, a forfeit at 125 pounds and four major decisions.
How It Happened
With the dual getting started at 125 pounds, the 'Dogs were forced to forfeit giving the Cyclones an early 6-0 lead. A 17-4 major decision by the Cyclones' Todd Small over Gary Joint at 133 pounds pushed ISU's lead to 10-0.
One of the marquee matches of the dual came at 141 pounds as the 'Dogs DJ Lloren, ranked as high as No. 13 by Trackwrestling, went up against No. 6 Ian Parker as the Cyclone was able to record a 9-1 major decision over Lloren to put an end to his eight-match winning streak.
A fall in 4:27 by ISU's No. 7 Jarrett Degen over the 'Dogs Greg Gaxiola extended the visitors lead to 20-0 before Wright got the 'Dogs on the board with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Grant Stotts. A takedown in the first period and an escape in the third period provided as much offense as Wright needed for his 17th victory of the season.
Kemp kept it going after a short intermission with a 8-6 win over No. 32 Chase Straw getting out to a 4-2 lead after the first period and pushed it to 7-3 early in the third period after a takedown. Straw countered with an escape and takedown to cut the deficit to 7-6, but one final escape by Kemp pushed the Bulldog to victory.
The final victory of the dual for the Bulldogs followed at 174 pounds as Martino pulled off the upset of No. 12 Sam Colbray with a 6-5 triumph to cut the Cyclones' lead to 20-9. With Colbray leading 4-3 after two periods, Martino started the third period on bottom, quickly escaping and coming through with a takedown for a 6-4 advantage as Colbray was only able to record an escape the rest of the match.
Iowa State closed the match with three straight wins getting a pair of major decisions and a fall at 197 pounds.
