FARGO, N.D. - The Fresno State wrestling team earned three individual wins on Saturday at North Dakota State, but fell 28-7 to the Bison in a Big 12 dual at the Scheels Center.
Fresno State (9-8, 4-2 B12) collected decisions from Greg Gaxiola at 149 pounds, Hunter Cruz at 184 pounds and Josh Hokit at heavyweight.
North Dakota State (7-3, 4-1 B12) earned wins in the other seven matches collecting a fall, forfeit, major decision along with four decisions.
How It Happened
With the dual starting at 125 pounds, the 'Dogs forfeited the match to give NDSU a 6-0 lead. Making his first appearance in a dual at 133 pounds this season, Lawrence Saenz got the call battling No. 10 Cam Sykora. The redshirt freshman was able to get a reversal after giving up an early takedown to even the match at 2-2, but Sykora built a 6-2 lead after the first period and extended it to 11-4 after two periods. A pair of takedowns in the final period were not enough for the Vacaville native as he dropped the match, 14-8.
Bumping up from his typical 133 pounds, Gary Joint wrestled at 141 pounds for the 'Dogs falling 10-0 to redshirt freshman Dylan Droegemueller to push the Bison's lead to 13-0.
The 'Dogs finally got on the board at 149 pounds as Gaxiola eeked out a hard-fought 3-1 win in sudden victory over Jaden Van Maanen. After two scoreless periods, the pair each earned one point apiece in the third to send it to overtime where the redshirt junior was able to take down Van Maanen for his 15th win of the season.
After three straight losses by the Bulldogs, including a tough 3-2 loss by redshirt sophomore Jacob Wright at 157 pounds to 16th-ranked Jared Franek, Cruz got the 'Dogs back on the winning track at 184 pounds with a 5-2 win over Noah Cressell. A takedown in the first period, an escape in the second and one final takedown in the third was enough offense for the Washington native's 20th overall win of the season.
The final win for the Bulldogs in the dual came at heavyweight as Hokit edged No. 27 Brandon Metz, 4-2. Hokit picked up three points in the second period on an escape & takedown and after a point for riding time collected his seventh win in a row.
