Diamond 'Dogs drop series finale to CSUB

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs dropped the series finale on Sunday to CSU Bakersfield falling 9-4 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (2-1) was slowed offensively as CSU Bakersfield (1-2) held the Bulldogs to five hits in the contest.
Newcomer Josh Lauck, a transfer from Miami, continued his stellar start to his Bulldog career as he was the lone 'Dog with multiple hits going 2-for-3 with a single, double, two runs scored, drew a walk and stole a base.
On the mound, senior right-hander Nik Cardinal got the start, but was only able to last 1.1 innings as he allowed eight hits, seven runs, six earned and struck out one.
Four relief pitchers saw action with junior Kyle Pruhsmeier tossing a career-high 3.1 innings allowing only three hits and striking out two. Robbie Peters tossed one inning while Alex Kendrick threw 1.1 innings.
Senior Oscar Carvajal threw the final two innings striking out a pair while allowing two hits and one earned run.
How It Happened
After building large leads in the first two games of the series, the 'Dogs were on the other end of the stick on Sunday as CSUB jumped out to a 7-0 lead bringing across one run in the first and tacking on six more in the second.
The Bulldogs finally broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with an RBI single through the right side by pinch-hitter Ivan Luna that drove home Lauck from second base.
The Roadrunners added a run in the sixth to take a 8-1 lead, but the 'Dogs made it a four-run contest with three runs in the bottom of the seventh getting a two-run RBI double to left field by Andrew Kachel which was followed by an RBI groundout by Ryan Higgins.
The scoring was complete in the ninth as CSUB got an RBI single to right-center as the Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season.
