High-powered offense powers 'Dogs in DH sweep over Lobos
5/1/2021 9:30:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno State (15-19, 12-12 MW), who extended its winning streak to five with the pair of victories, tallied 16 hits in game one with four going for extra-bases before powering four home runs in game two and adding three doubles.
EJ Andrews, Jr., Andrew Kachel and Emilio Nogales all matched their single-game career highs with three hits apiece in game one with Andrews, Jr. and Nogales each scoring three runs apiece.
After game one saw eight 'Dogs with hits and six score runs, game two saw a repeat offensively. The Bulldogs slugged four home runs in the nightcap led by a three-run shot from Zach Morgan (watch) and solo home runs from Andrews, Jr. and two solo long balls from Matt Ottino.
On the mound, the 'Dogs got a pair of solid starts from the 1-2 punch of right-hander Jamison Hill and southpaw Jake Dixon.
Hill picked up his fifth win of the season, and third in his last four starts, tossing six innings allowing seven hits, four earned runs, one walk and struck out five. Ixan Henderson and Nik Cardinal combined to work 1.2 innings before giving way to Oscar Carvajal to get the final four outs and earn his third save of 2021.
In the nightcap, Dixon won his fourth straight start to move to 6-2 on the season as the Clovis native went five innings limiting the Lobos to two earned runs, one walk and struck out four. Cooper Bergman and Robbie Peters combined to pitch three innings and Tommy Hopfe closed out the action in the ninth striking out a pair.
How It Happened Game 1
Andrews Jr. got game one off to a hot start for the 'Dogs with a leadoff home run (watch) to left field and Dylan Johnson made it 2-0 after two innings with a sacrifice bunt (watch).
A four-run third inning pushed the Bulldogs out in front 6-0 as Andrews, Jr. and Kachel led off with singles. Ryan Higgins drove home Andrews, Jr. with an RBI double (watch) down the left field line which was followed by a two-run RBI single up the middle by Nogales (watch) and the scoring was closed out by an RBI double by Johnson (watch) that just found its way inside the left field line.
An RBI single by Ivan Luna (watch) in the fourth extended the 'Dogs lead to 7-0, but New Mexico (9-19, 6-11 MW) quickly answered back with four runs of their own on a solo home run and a three-run home run.
Kachel kept the 'Dogs offense running at high speed knocking in a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-run RBI single (watch) to right to increase the 'Dogs lead to 9-4.
A pair of runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth for the Lobos closed the 'Dogs lead to 9-7, but Johnson came through with an insurance run in the ninth before the Lobos closed out the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
With one out and runners at the corners for Carvajal, the Bulldog right-hander was able to get pinch-hitter Jacob Gutierrez to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play to seal the win (watch).
How It Happened Game 2
Game two saw both offenses continue to operate at a high level with the Lobos getting started with two runs in the bottom of the second before taking the lead for good with a three-run top of the third. A solo home run by Ottino (watch) to left got the 'Dogs on the board and that was followed by back-to-back RBI base knocks from Higgins (watch) and Luna (watch).
A four-run fifth inning put the Bulldogs up 7-2 getting an RBI single by Higgins (watch) and a three-run shot by Morgan (watch) to left field.
The scoring was far from done as the 'Dogs continue to pile up the runs with back-to-back solo home runs from Ottino (watch) and Andrews, Jr. (watch) in the sixth for a 9-2 lead and an RBI single to center (watch) in the seventh by Ottino made it 10-2 in favor of Fresno State.
The Lobos started their charge back into the game with a three-run bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run and an RBI single to trim the 'Dogs lead to 10-5.
Higgins laced an RBI single (watch) back up the middle in the eighth to make it 11-5, but again New Mexico responded with two runs on a double by Kyler Castillo in the bottom of the eighth.
With the 'Dogs leading 11-7 heading to the bottom of the ninth, a two-out two-run RBI triple by pinch-hitter Cole Posey cut the lead to 11-9, but a groundout back to Hopfe sealed the win for the Bulldogs (watch).
Quotes
Assistant Coach Greg Gonzalez
On getting the doubleheader sweep over the Lobos...
"They are a tough team and we are starting to find ways to win even when things are not going our way."
On what stood out among the pitchers....
"We talk about it in our prep work against a team that can really swing the bat well, just making sure they are prepared for everything they may see. Jamison and Jake had tremendous starts for us to lead us off and then our guys came in and I can't say enough some of these guys. A guy like Robbie Peters, he started the last few weeks, but he was ready when his number was called."
