TIGHT ENDS
While many have been focused on the depth of the Bulldogs' receiving corps, Fresno State's tight ends refuse to be overlooked this season.
Fresno State brings back four tight ends from the 2020 season, including one starter in Raymond Pauwels Jr. Pauwels played in five games last season with four starts. The Bulldogs also return two letterwinners in Rory Hanson and Jared Torres. Hanson led the Bulldogs' tight ends with 25 yards on three catches last season.
The squad looks forward to having a healthy Juan Rodriguez in its arsenal, as he played in one game last season before suffering a season-ending injury. Rodriguez has emerged as the leader of the position group - leading by example every day.
Fresno State has added depth to the position with three newcomers. Freshman Tre Watson has turned heads in fall camp with his athleticism. Watson was a highly touted three-star recruit who chose the Bulldogs over 11 other offers. Kamron Beachem, another true freshman, was also a three-star recruit who was previously committed to Arizona State as a wide receiver during his high school and has since bulked up to make the position change. Veteran junior college transfer Jake Boust adds some more experience to the team after spending the past two seasons at Fresno City.
"We had to decide with as many good players as we have on offense what our role as a tight end position was going to be to make an impact, and that's be physical," said tight ends coach Paul Creighton. "You have to add a physical element to this offense, that only comes through us. We have great wide receivers that can catch a ball. I want us to catch balls too, but we have to be physical to contribute on the field."
