SPENDING TIME IN THE VALLEY
After being on the road for much of the nonconference season in 2022, Fresno State reversed course with its 2023 schedule. All five of the Bulldogs' games before Labor Day will be played in Central Valley, with four of those games being played in the friendly confines of Bulldog Soccer Stadium.
UNBEATEN THROUGH 2
With a draw and a win to open 2023, Fresno State is unbeaten to start a fall season for the first time since 2019. That year, the Bulldogs opened with a 2-2 draw against Oregon before a 4-2 defeat of Pacific.
FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET TWICE
Against CSU Bakersfield on Aug. 20, Fresno State scored twice in the opening half against the Roadrunners. It was the first time since Oct. 3, 2021 against Wyoming that the 'Dogs scored multiple goals in a first half.
PUTTING UP SHOTS
In their first two matches the Bulldogs outshoot both of their opponents, totaling 13 shots against CSU Bakersfield and 12 versus Cal Poly. The 'Dogs were +1 against the Roadrunners but were +6 against the Mustangs.
FINDING THE SCORING COLUMN
Against a Central Valley opponent, it was of course a Central Valley native that produced. Fresno native and senior forward Megan Galvan produced not only the match's opening goal at CSU Bakersfield, but also assisted on the winner.
TOOK OVER
When Haley Espinoza entered the match in Bakersfield, she was immediately a terror on the right flank. She set up the game's opening goal, sprinting past her marker and sending in a dangerous cross. Just before half, she did the same, but this time, while the ball stalled inside the six, the junior raced in, taking the ball off the foot of a teammate before ripping her shot inside the post for her first career goal. It proved to be the game-winner.
TRANSITIONING BACK TO THE SOCCER FIELD
After competing for the Fresno State track & field during her freshman year, Sabrina Welch transitioned to the Bulldogs' soccer program after earning a spot during the spring of '23. The former high school player has already shown her worth being able to play all over the field.
REPRESENTING FOR THE FRESHMEN
Only one freshman has cracked the starting XI for Fresno State thus far. In her first collegiate match, local product Katie Morris played every minute at right back. The defender from Clovis North HS followed that up by playing 79 minutes in her first road game.
