Fresno State women's tennis player Lucia Sainz was named gobulldogs.com's Athlete of the Week for the March 15-21.

A sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, Sainz went 2-0 in both singles and doubles to lift the 14th-ranked Bulldogs to 7-0 victories over No. 50 Missouri and No. 72 Minnesota. The wins added to what has been a remarkable improvement for Sainz since last year. In all of the 2002-03 campaign, Sainz won only six singles matches. But this season, she has already won 15, including three in a row and five of the last six.

And as always, Sainz is providing her usual solid doubles play. Teaming with partner Katharina Winterhalter, the duo is 16-5 (6-4 dual) and lost a combined four games in their two contests last week.

The player of the week honors are the first ever for Sainz and the third for a women's tennis player. Jelena Pandzic and Winterhalter have also won the award.
