The Fresno State Wrestling team returns home to host Utah Valley on Friday evening at the Save Mart Center for its first Big 12 home dual.
FRESNO, Calif. - After traveling east to Virginia last weekend for the Virginia Duals, the Fresno State Wrestling team returns home to host Utah Valley on Friday evening at the Save Mart Center for its first Big 12 home dual.

The Wolverines enter Friday's dual with a 5-3 overall dual record while they sport a 2-1 record in the Big 12. UVU has picked up wins over West Virginia (24-9) and North Dakota State (26-13) before recently falling at home last Friday to No. 15 South Dakota State, 31-10.
Utah Valley has a pair of ranked wrestlers in redshirt freshman Taylor LaMont at 125 pounds and redshirt sophomore Demetrius Romero at 165 pounds. Both LaMont and Romero have 20 wins apiece on the season and each are perfect in dual competition with LaMont 7-0 and Romero 8-0.
The Wolverines have a pair of Valley natives in 133-pounder Durbin Lloren, a redshirt freshman who went to Buchanan High School, and redshirt junior 149-pounder Matthew Ontiveros who attended Central High School.

Nevills stays perfect in dual meet action at Virginia Duals
Freshman heavyweight AJ Nevills went a perfect 6-0 on the weekend at the Virginia Duals to improve to 23-3 overall on the season and 13-0 in dual meet action. Nevills recorded three falls, his first technical fall of the season and a decision on the weekend.
For his efforts, Nevills was named the Fresno State Athletics Student-Athlete of the Week and one was one of four nominees for the NCAA Wrestler of the Week.
On the season, Nevills has a team-high nine pins and 10 wins by decision and he is currently riding a 12-match winning streak.
Two 'Dogs in the first of four NCAA Wrestling Coaches Panel Rankings
Nevills and redshirt sophomore 149-pounder Khristian Olivas debut in the top 30 of the first NCAA Wrestling Coaches Panel that helps to determine who will qualify for the 2018 NCAA Championships released on Thursday as Nevills checks in No. 28 at heavyweight while Olivas comes in No. 22 at 149.
Three more rankings will be released before it is determined in early March who will qualify for the national tournament set to be in at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on March 15-17.
Hokit continues to make transition back to the mat
Sophomore Josh Hokit made his return to the wrestling mat against Cal Poly on Jan. 4 recording a pin in 4:14 in his first career collegiate match. A 2016 graduate of nearby Clovis High School, Hokit was a premier prep wrestler winning a individual state championship at 182 pounds as a senior. Deciding he wanted to compete in both football and wrestling at the Division I level, Hokit stayed home and walked-on to the Fresno State football team in 2016.Â
ÂAs a sophomore this fall, Hokit led the 'Dogs with seven rushing touchdowns while ranking second on the team in rushing with 583 yards on the ground and 128 carries. The Clovis native added 13 receptions for 107 yards and tossed a pair of touchdown passes.
Over the weekend, Hokit went 3-3 at the Virginia Duals picking up a 8-4 win against Lock Haven, a 7-2 win in overtime against Iowa State and a medical default against Bucknell.
'Dogs defeat Cal Poly for first Division I victory
Thanks to seven individual victories, including four bonus-point wins, the 'Dogs notched their first win over a Division I opponent on Jan. 4 defeating Cal Poly, 29-13. Greg Gaxiola notched a 20-6 major decision at 157 pounds before Isaiah Hokit kept it going at 165 pounds with a 23-8 technical fall win. The dual wrapped up with a pair of falls from Josh Hokit and AJ Nevills at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to seal the win over the Mustangs.
Battle on the Midway
On Nov. 21, Fresno State competed in its first-ever dual as members of the Big 12 Conference falling 24-12 to Air Force in the inaugural Battle on the Midway. Aboard the USS Midway, the 'Dogs dropped a pair of hard-fought one-point matches at 125 and 133 pounds, only to rebound at 149 and 157 pounds as Olivas and Greg Gaxiola won by technical fall and major decision, respectively, to close the dual score to 12-9 before Air Force went on to win the next four weight classes each by decisions.
Fresno State Wrestling returns to the Valley
On Nov. 17, in front of 6,840 Red Wave supporters, the third-largest dual in program history, Fresno State Wrestling returned to the Valley as the 'Dogs battled Big 10 foe Illinois at the Save Mart Center.
The 'Dogs, who fell in the dual 33-10, came out with three dual wins as Olivas got Fresno State on the board with a 10-2 major decision at 149 pounds over nationally-ranked Eric Barone while Gaxiola followed it up with a 9-5 win at 157 pounds over another nationally-ranked foe in Eric Langenderfer.
The final win for the Bulldogs came at heavyweight as Nevills topped Duece Rachal, 7-5 with a late takedown in the third period.

The 'Dogs continue Big 12 action on the road next weekend for a pair of duals traveling to Northern Colorado on Friday, Jan. 26 before making the short trip to No. 11 Wyoming on Saturday, Jan. 27.
