The Bulldogs won a pair of overtime matches at No. 21 Iowa State in a 31-6 loss at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday.
AMES, Iowa - Highlighted by overtime wins by Jacob Wright and Josh Hokit, the Fresno State wrestling team fell at No. 21 Iowa State, 31-6 on Sunday afternoon in a Big 12 dual at Hilton Coliseum.
Wright helped Fresno State (4-6, 1-3 B12) get on the scoreboard with a 5-4 win in tiebreaker one over Chase Straw of Iowa State (4-1, 2-0 B12) at 157 pounds and Hokit downed No. 4 Willie Miklus, 4-2 in sudden victory at 197 pounds for the Bulldogs' two wins of the dual.
How It Happened
With the dual starting at 141 pounds, sophomore Chris Deloza was the first Bulldog to wrestle jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first 10 seconds of the match. After Deloza was able to escape with 1:09 remaining in the firs period to knot the match at 3-3, it was all No. 12 Ian Parker from there as the Cyclone redshirt sophomore would go on for a 19-5 major decision.
Trailing the dual 4-0, the match of the day came next at 149 pounds as the 'Dogs Khristian Olivas, ranked as high as No. 15 by Trackwrestling, took on No. 8 Jarrett Degen. Olivas took a 3-2 lead midway through the first period nabbing an escape and takedown, but couldn't keep the momentum going as Degen earned a two-point near fall to start the third period on his way to a 11-6 win.
Wright came through at 157 pounds to get the Bulldogs' on the scoreboard fighting back from a 4-2 deficit in the second period to get an escape and stalling point in the third to tie the score at 4-4 and send it to extra time. After there was no scoring in sudden victory, Wright choose down first in the first tiebreaker and escaped in three seconds while he was able to keep the Cyclones' Chase Straw from escaping to pull out the victory and cut the dual meet score to 7-3.
The final two matches of the first half of the dual saw Brandon Martino battle hard at 165 pounds taking an early 5-2 lead before dropping a 11-7 decision to Logan Schumacher and Dominic Kincaid drop a 14-1 major decision at 174 pounds to No. 24 Marcus Coleman.
Trailing 14-3 halfway through the dual, the second of two matches in the dual that saw two ranked wrestlers facing each other, the 'Dogs 20th-ranked Jackson Hemauer took on No. 16 Sam Colbray started the second half. Hemauer tied the match up at 4-4 after he was able to secure a takedown near the end of the first period, but a third-period takedown by Colbray with 0:29 left broke a 6-6 tie and proved to be the difference in the match.
Trailing 17-3, Hokit got the 'Dogs back within 11 at 17-6 with a 4-2 sudden victory over Miklus, a three-time All-American at Missouri who graduate transferred to Iowa State, securing a takedown with 0:17 remaining in sudden victory.
A third straight close match came about at heavyweight as the 'Dogs No. 15 AJ Nevills took on unranked redshirt sophomore Gannon Gremmel. Locked up at 2-2 after Nevills opened the second period with an escape, Gremmel scored four straight points with a stalling point, escape and a takedown as the Dubuque, Iowa native held off a late charge by Nevills to win, 6-5.
The final two matches of the dual turned out to be lopsided as ISU's Alex Mackall pinned the 'Dogs Robert Garcia IV in 5:54 and the Cyclones' 133-pounder Austin Gomez secured a technical fall of Gary Joint, 24-5 in 5:32 to make the final score 31-6.
