Fresno State Wrestling continues its Big 12 stretch this week traveling to No. 23 Utah Valley on Friday before returning home to host South Dakota State on Sunday at the Save Mart Center.

Scouting No. 23 Utah Valley
Utah Valley enters Friday's dual against the Bulldogs with a 7-6 overall record in duals. The 'Dogs matchup with the Wolverines will be UVU's Big 12 opener as well as home opener and are coming off splitting a pair of duals in Palo Alto on Jan. 12 defeating Harvard, 27-16 and narrowly falling to Stanford, 20-19.
UVU is coming off a 8-6 dual meet mark in 2017-18 and and an eighth place finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships and return four NCAA qualifiers from a year ago. Only two will wrestle on Friday in Demetrius Romero at 165 pounds and Tanner Orndorff at 197 pounds.
Romero is 17-2 overall on the season and comes in as high as No. 8 in the nation while Orndorff is No. 11 at 197 pounds. Two other Wolverines are also ranked as redshirt sophomore 141-pound Matt Findlay is as high as No. 8 and redshirt freshman Tate Orndorff is No. 10 and 16-3 at heavyweight.
Scouting South Dakota State
SDSU enters Sunday's dual with a 1-5 dual meet mark and an 0-2 mark in Big 12 with losses to Oklahoma State and Northern Iowa. The Jackrabbits are 1-1 in a pair of road duals defeating Oregon State and falling to Minnesota and are coming off a 34-0 loss at home to No. 18 Pittsburgh on Jan. 13.
South Dakota State is coming off a third place finish at the 2018 Big 12 Championships and a 14-2 mark in duals and a 8-0 mark in Big 12 duals. Led by first-year head coach Damion Hahn, SDSU returns three NCAA qualifiers from a year ago, including defending 133-pound national champion Seth Gross, who has been limited by injury this season and only wrestled one match.
Junior 149-pounder Henry Pohlmeyer is the lone SDSU grappler nationally ranked and will get a rematch with the 'Dogs Khristian Olivas as the two met earlier this season at the Midlands Championships with Olivas securing a fall in 4:12.
Junior Martin Mueller also returns after qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2018 at 184 pounds and has bumped up to 197 pounds this year and is 7-7 overall with a 2-1 mark in duals.
Hokit named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week
Junior 197-pounder Josh Hokit earned Fresno State Wrestling's first-ever Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honor on Monday after defeating then-No. 4 ranked Willie Miklus of Iowa State, 4-2 in sudden victory last Sunday.
It was Hokit's first win over a ranked opponent this season and the highest ranked wrestler a Bulldog has defeated this season.
Four 'Dogs in the national rankings
Four Bulldogs find themselves in the national rankings after Hokit made his debut in the polls this week coming in No. 16 by FloWrestling
Redshirt junior 149-pounder Khristian Olivas is as high as No. 15 by Trackwrestling and WIN Magazine followed by No. 17 by FloWrestling, No. 18 by InterMat and No. 20 by The Open Mat.Â
Jackson Hemauer checks in 19th by WIN Magazine and No. 21 by Trackwrestling at 184 pounds while AJ Nevills continues to be ranked at heavyweight checking in No. 21 in the Trackwrestling polls.
Bulldogs continue Big 12 action
The 'Dogs come into the weekend with a 1-3 record in Big 12 duals this season with a win at Northern Colorado and losses to Air Force, North Dakota State and Iowa State.
In their first two seasons in the league, the Bulldogs are 2-8 overall with both wins coming at Northern Colorado as the 'Dogs will look to win their first dual at home as members of the Big 12 on Sunday against South Dakota State.
The Bulldogs have two more remaining Big 12 duals after this weekend hosting No. 12 Wyoming on Feb, 3 and Oklahoma on Feb. 17.
Olivas heads back to Utah Valley
Olivas returns to Orem, Utah and Utah Valley where he spent his freshman season in 2015-16 compiling a 5-1 record competing unattached and went 5-0 on his way to a Cowboy Open title.
Pair of wins at No. 21 Iowa State
The Bulldogs won a pair of matches last Sunday at Iowa State with a 5-4 win at 157 pounds by Jacob Wright in a tiebreaker while also getting a win from Hokit. The 'Dogs battled in many of the other matches with Hemauer and Nevills each only falling one point short while 165-pounder Brandon Martino only lost by four, 11-7.
'Dogs shutout California Baptist
Shutting out its first opponent since 2005, the 'Dogs won all 10 matches last Thursday against California Baptist blanking the Lancers, 43-0 at the Save Mart Center. Fresno State used a pair of falls, a technical fall and two major decisions to roll to its first shutout since blanking Menlo College, 47-0 on Jan. 4, 2005.
Pledge for Pins (Current count: 25)
Pledges for pins is designed to help support the Fresno State Wrestling Program. Proceeds will benefit the Fresno State Wrestling Fund for Excellence along with a portion contributing to the Valley Regional Training Center -- a nonprofit organization that supports Fresno State Wrestling.
It works like this, for example, if you pledge $5 per pin and the team accumulates 40 pins during the season, your pledge will be $200. Throughout the season, pins and pledges will be recorded and a letter will be mailed with your pledge amount and payment information.
