FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Wrestling team got the 2019-20 season unofficially underway on Saturday afternoon hosting the Red vs. Blue Intrasquad in the South Gym on the campus of Fresno State.
As part of the California Coaches Seminar hosted by Fresno State Wrestling, that features the likes of 2018 World Champion David Taylor, former USA Wrestling head coach Bruce Burnett and former Bulldog All-American Stephen Abas, fans were treated to 10 matches with the Red team coming out on top, 24-13 winning six matches.
With the Intrasquad starting at 125 pounds, redshirt sophomore Robert Garcia IV narrowly edged classmate Jeremy Trinh, 3-2 to put the Red team up, 3-0. Returning 2019 NCAA Tournament qualifier Gary Joint evened up things for the Blue team with a 7-1 win over junior college transfer Isaiah Perez.
One of three matches decided by a single point, the first of the one-point matches came at 141 points with Utah Valley transfer redshirt junior DJ Lloren narrowly edging redshirt freshman Lawrence Saenz, 4-3 to put the Red team ahead 6-3. The Red team increased its lead to 9-3 with a 7-1 win by Greg Gaxiola over true freshman Jace Luchau. Gaxiola, a redshirt junior from Clovis, will look to return to the lineup this season after taking a redshirt season in 2018-19.
