The Diamond 'Dogs rallied from a six-run deficit for eight unanswered runs on Tuesday for a 8-6 win over Cal Poly.
With the win, Fresno State (27-13-1) picks up its 12th win over its last 15 games and moves to 7-1 in midweek contests this season.
For the 22nd time this season, the Bulldogs reached double-digit hits with 10 as a club and scored at least eight runs for the 15th time in 2019.
Leading the way on Tuesday was senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey who recorded his first career triple and smacked a three-run home run in the sixth inning while matching his single-game career-high with five RBIs and three runs scored.
Redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum added a pair of singles and scored two runs while freshman right fielder EJ Andrews, Jr. had a single, double and drew a walk.
On the mound, redshirt sophomore Oscar Carvajal improved to a perfect 4-0 with a flawless eighth inning. Junior right-hander Nik Cardinal received his second start of the year and gave way to four more pitchers after 1.2 innings of work prior to Carvajal coming into the game. Sophomore southpaw Jaime Arias made quick work of the ninth with a quick 1-2-3 frame to pick up his 10th save of the season.
How It Happened
Cal Poly (20-21) got things going early with a two-out, two-run double to right-center by designated hitter Conagher Sands in the top of the first for a quick 2-0 lead.
A one-out home run to left field by third baseman Nick DiCarlo in the second inning pushed Cal Poly in front, 3-0 before the Mustangs ripped off three more runs in the fourth inning for a 6-0 lead. DiCarlo's second home run of the game, a two-run home run to left field, was followed by a sacrifice fly to right field by center fielder Bradlee Beesley.
Looking to get a smark going offensively, Dempsey shot life into the Bulldogs with a RBI triple (watch) to left-center driving in shortstop J.T. Arruda and a throwing error by the Mustangs allowed Dempsey to come home to make it 6-2.
The 'Dogs continued to cut into Cal Poly's lead in the sixth inning getting one-out singles by Arruda and Tatum to put a pair of runners on for Dempsey. The San Carlos native continued his big night from the plate with his fifth home run of the season (watch) blasting the ball to left field to get the 'Dogs back within one run at 6-5.
Dempsey continued to come up big tying the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI sacrifice bunt (watch). Freshman pinch-hitter Matt Ottino followed with a single back to the pitcher (watch) that bounced to the right side of the infeld allowing Tatum to score from third base and give the 'Dogs their first lead of the game at 7-6.
A bases-loaded walk to left fielder Auston Chastain drove in Dempsey to give the Bulldogs a two-run lead as that would be enough for Arias who shut down any comeback attempt by the Mustangs.
Notables
- Arias moves into a tie for fourth on the single-season save list with 10 and a tie for seventh on the career list with 11.
- Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Sullivan threw a career-high 2.2 innings.
- Carter Bins extended his on-base streak to 24 games with a single.
