'Dogs top Lions, 9-1 to win series opener

FRESNO, Calif. - Keeping their hot-hitting and strong pitching going after a 13-run shutout on Tuesday, the Diamond 'Dogs picked up where they left with a 9-1 win over Columbia on Friday evening in the series opener against the Lions at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (4-4) collected 11 hits in the contest smacking two more home runs for its sixth game with multiple home runs this season.
Sophomore outfielder EJ Andrews, Jr. and junior infielder Emilio Nogales each went deep for the first time this season while the 'Dogs added three doubles getting one apiece from junior catcher Zach Presno, redshirt sophomore outfielder Dylan Johnson and redshirt freshman infielder Ivan Luna.
Presno finished the contest 2-for-3 with two RBIs as he now has a team-leading nine RBIs on the season.
On the mound, junior southpaw Jaime Arias had a standout performance throwing a career-high 7.0 innings and striking out a career-best 12.
The Woodland, Calif., native limited Columbia (0-1) to five hits, one earned run and one walk for his second win of the season.
Sophomore right-hander Kyle Pruhsmeier closed out the final two innings limiting the Lions to one hit while striking out one in his fourth appearance of 2020.
How It Happened
Scoring at least one run in the first six innings, the 'Dogs had a consistent offensive approach on Friday getting the scoring started with a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Nogales.
The 'Dogs tacked on to the lead in the second inning with Andrews Jr.'s two-run home run to left field (watch) to make it 3-0.
A one-out solo home run to right field by Nogales in the third inning put the 'Dogs up 4-0 (watch).
The offense kept pounding Lions pitching in the fourth with two more runs on Presno's two-run RBI double down the left field line (watch) to extend the lead to 6-0.
Two more runs in the fifth put the Bulldogs in front, 8-0 as a double play by Andrews, Jr. drove in Zach Morgan from third and Luna smacked his first career double to bring around Johnson from second.
One final run by the 'Dogs in the sixth saw infielder Blake Wink single up the middle to score Nick Berry and give Fresno State a commanding 9-0 lead.
The Lions finally broke through on the scoreboard in the seventh with a one-out RBI double by first baseman Tyler MacGregor, but were only able to muster one more hit the rest of the way.
