Bulldog Wrestling returns home to host Cal Poly Thursday

The Bulldogs host Cal Poly on Thursday at 7 p.m.
FRESNO, Calif. -Â After more than two weeks since its last competition, Fresno State Wrestling gets the New Year started on Thursday hosting Pac-12 foe Cal Poly at The Save Mart Center at 7 p.m.

The Mustangs are 0-1 in dual meets this season falling at home to Big 10 opponent Northwestern, 30-8 on Dec. 15. Cal Poly has also competed in four individual tournaments this season taking part in the Roadrunner Open in Bakersfield in November along with the Cliff Keen Invite, Reno Tournament of Champions and the Midlands Championships in December.
Cal Poly tied with the Bulldogs for ninth at the Reno Tournament of Champions as three Mustangs placed in the top six led by sophomore 197-pounder Tom Lane who finished second while 174-pounder Matt Wilhelm and 285-pounder Spencer Empey both finished sixth.
Senior 141-pounder Colton Schilling was Cal Poly's lone placewinner at the Midlands Championships finishing eighth becoming the first Mustang in the top eight since 2013. Cal Poly placed 24th in the 38-team competition.

'Dogs finish tied for ninth at Reno Tournament of Champions
The 'Dogs finished the one-day tournament with 51.5 points in the 57-team field as sophomore 149-pounder Khristian Olivas paced the Bulldogs with a fifth-place finish dropping his first match to Ty Buckiso (The Citadel), 7-2 only to rebound in the wrestlebacks with a pair of falls, a major decision and a narrow 6-5 win over Jaron Jansen (Wyoming) on his way to a medal.
Two other 'Dogs won multiple matches on the day as freshman heavyweight AJ Nevills followed Olivas' path dropping his first match before getting going in the wrestlebacks with an 11-0 major decision over Mark Penyacsek (CSUB) before three straight falls and a narrow 4-3 win over Blake Andrews (Oklahoma) brought his record to 5-1 on the day as he was finished hitting his six-match limit for the day. Redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Isaiah Hokit went 4-2 in the tournament winning by a decision, major decision, technical fall and fall before having to bow out of the tournament in the consolation semifinals with an injury.
Six 'Dogs also wrestled unattached on the day as all six wrestlers won at least two matches on the day. Freshman 125-pounder Robert Garcia IV finished fifth with a 5-1 record as he dropped his first match to Drake Foster of Wyoming only to reel off five straight wins, including a 3-2 win over Foster, to earn a medal. The unattached group finished 17th in the field of 57 teams.
'Dogs last time out in dual meet action
Last time out in dual meet action, Fresno State dropped a pair of duals falling at home to CSU Bakersfield, 30-7 on Dec. 8 and at No. 10 Minnesota, 38-7 on Dec. 10.
The 'Dogs got a pair of wins in each dual by Khristian Olivas at 149 pounds and AJ Nevills at heavyweight. Olivas won each of his duals by a major decision topping Kalani Tonge of CSUB, 11-1 and kept his strong weekend going with a 14-2 rout of Minnesota's Hunter Marko.
Nevills only allowed his opponents to score a pair of points defeating Mark Penyacsek (CSUB), 7-1 and topped Rylee Streifel of Minnesota, 5-1.
Battle on the Midway
On Nov. 21, Fresno State competed in its first-ever dual as members of the Big 12 Conference falling 24-12 to Air Force in the inaugural Battle on the Midway. Aboard the USS Midway, the 'Dogs dropped a pair of hard-fought one-point matches at 125 and 133 pounds, only to rebound at 149 and 157 pounds as Olivas and Greg Gaxiola won by technical fall and major decision, respectively, to close the dual score to 12-9 before Air Force went on to win the next four weight classes each by decisions.
Fresno State Wrestling returns to the Valley
On Nov. 17, in front of 6,840 Red Wave supporters, the third-largest dual in program history, Fresno State Wrestling returned to the Valley as the 'Dogs battled Big 10 foe Illinois at the Save Mart Center.
The 'Dogs, who fell in the dual 33-10, came out with three dual wins as Olivas got Fresno State on the board with a 10-2 major decision at 149 pounds over nationally-ranked Eric Barone while Gaxiola followed it up with a 9-5 win at 157 pounds over another nationally-ranked foe in Eric Langenderfer.
The final win for the Bulldogs came at heavyweight as Nevills topped Duece Rachal, 7-5 with a late takedown in the third period.
Up next
Fresno State heads out east next weekend to compete in the Virginia Duals in Hampton on Jan. 12-13. The 'Dogs will compete in two duals each day against a field that will include No. 10 Arizona State, Bucknell, Campbell, Chattanooga, Iowa State, Kent State, Lock Haven, No. 11 Northern Iowa, No. 18 Oklahoma, Old Dominion, Virginia and No. 9 Virginia Tech.
